You can't do this any more. The law changed recently so if you're car isn't insured, tax or not, its illegal. The only exception (and one that I suspect is all to easy to use) is if the car is declared SORN. However with ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) popping up everywhere, all that's getting harder. I guess it just takes a bit of time.

The thing that really winds me up, apart from the obvious danger, is that its people like this that spoil things for everyone. Near my wife's mam's now I nearly bust my suspension every time I drive that way because of the extremely brutal speed bumps. They've only recently been added after lots of complaints about a little idiot who thought it was funny to do 90mph (he claimed, while bragging) in a clapped out Fiat Uno. Now, because of him and people like him, everyone else has to smash their suspension in every time they use that road, and gods help anyone who might need to get to hospital quickly in an ambulance. They'd get launched about all over the place.

 

Oh yes, the speed ramp.
Totally useless for those it was intended for.
A complete pain in the backside for everyone else.
