That's good to hear. I've been using Ubuntu for about 1 month now and just getting used to it. Is it advisable to upgrade every six months or is that taken care of with the regular updates that seem to appear every two days ? The only problem with it is that Ubuntu doesn't seem to allow any control over the monitor screen. I'm using a flat screen and it's very stark when viewing these bulletin boards. Would it help if I installed a graphics card in the PC ? Sorry if I'm highjacking the thread :o

Ubuntu is good but the last few versions have been having a few problems on many setups (but if you mention it on the official forum they will just tell you its your fault. The key is, if a version does what you need, stick with it unless you are a very patient enthusiast.

The issues to use are LTS (Long Term Support), unless you have some particular requirement which the other issues address. There is a difference between the 32bit and 64bit issues. My 64 bit laptop would not install the 32bit version, so I installed the 8.10/64 version which is not LTS, and I shall have to move up to the next LTS issue when it becomes available.

Regarding graphics cards, NVidia is well supported as is ATI. My Acer Aspire Laptop has few problems, The HP Laserjet being one of them on 8.10/64 (I use that on 8.04/32 on an Acer desktop) and the Epson V200 scanner is another. I also had a problem with a Canoscan 4400F. Both these scanners do transparencies as well as documents and do not get recognised. I have no problem with Canon Lide 20 or HP Photosmart C4280 Printer/scanner.

So in order to use the Epson V200 I have to keep a swappable HDD running XP. I suppose we shall get there one day.

The latest LTS version doesn't work out of the box with nVidia graphics cards, and some intel ones. Also there is a major kernel issue in it that takes effect with some very common motherboards (including one of mine). It is well documented in LaunchPad but on the official forum it is somewhat denied or overlooked. The bugs are: The kernel issue causes random complete lockups, the nVidia issue causes the system to lock up as soon as the nVidia driver is activated towards the end of boot-up. These issues can be resolved, but only if you have the patience and know-how to tinker with the setup.

Hopefully these issues will be resolved in a later version. I'm sure they will, as they are logged as bugs and are well documented, but when I last checked, the developers were still having trouble pinning the problem down to a specific set of conditions.

The moral of the story is this: try it, its free. If it works for you, great, if not, try a different version.

post #1 sounds like the virtumonde virus. Basically malware/adware. However definately do NOT buy anything from these ads.

Just google virtumonde and it will lead you to many downloadable testers to see if you have it on your pc and also recommendations to help remove it. It is a ****** to get rid of though.

Sorry Stig, it's nothing to do with virus, they don't work on our system.

I have now found the latest instructions for installing Adobe Flashplayer 64bit version, carried out the installation via the CLI and it's working. But as it's an Alpha version anything could happen.

Incidentally, has anyone used the new Mozilla Suite "SeaMonkey". It's an all in one suite, Browser, Email, Address Book and HML Editor. Very useful for Webmaster's. I use it most of the time now.

Just cleared this off a pc and the post is just the same as what was on the infected pc.
This is a good antimalware program to run http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html

Click on the FL-USA donload link.
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Its a very good program for removing pop ups. Hijackthis is decent too as long as you know what you are removing.Download it here, http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/

Install then do a scan and save a lof file. Post up the log and it can be checked to see what problems you have.
