Looks like the sort of job where a builder could find a host up 'extras' as soon as they start work.

How long has it been like this? It must have been noticeable from water running down the face of the wall where the downpipe has become disconnected. Has that caused any further damage? If it happened yesterday it should spring back as soon as the BT wire is removed, otherwise if it's been slowly happening over a period of time everything could now be set in that position.

If the fascia 'board' is now warped by about 40mm (about half a rainwater down pipe) and will need replacing which will probably require removal and refixing of soffit boards and guttering. Is it a uPVC board, or an L shaped profile covering an old rotten timber fascia? Will any asbestos cement sheet be found up there?

The guttering will also be warped and some will require replacing, the extent of which depends on whether the existing profile is still (readily) available, or requires a complete replacement with new, and then what about connecting to the adjacent property?

The rainwater downpipe has dropped down, why?

It's their property. Are you intending to go up the pole to disconnect at the other end, or just make an unauthorised connection at the eaves and leave it dangling from the pole? There may be a charge.

P.S. Have you put a spirit level on the BT pole? Plus when things start moving always cast your eyes around the brickwork for cracks or broken joints.

Is that an overflow from a roofspace water tank routed into the rainwater downpipe? I thought that wasn't permitted, or it it from aircon? Looks like a plastic carrier bag has been used to seal the joint between the downpipe and gutter outlet ( saw that done on a local showhome recently).

    Tenants only insure contents.

I have a local property maintenance company coming to take a look at it this afternoon - he came recommended on our local Neighbourhood Watch group and lives only a few streets away.

@Scrungee - it has been like that since Wednesday. I had an old aerial removed, and a wee while after they had gone I heard a bit of a pop, but thought nothing of it until I got home later on and thought I would look up to see if there was any damage done to the chimney as the aerial had been rocking in the wind (there wasn't) - that was when I spotted the problem. I am assuming that pressure from the aerial guys ladder on the front edge of the gutter has maybe started the downpipe moving and after he has left it has let go.

I am not intending on doing anything with the BT connection - it can be in free space, it can be cut, it can be re-bolted to the house, I don't give a monkeys; we don't need it, we don't want it, we haven't used it in the 11 years we have been here. BT can shove any idea of charging where the sun doesn't shine - if anything, the charge should be going the other way as it is their wire support that has caused the problem to our fascia board.

Regarding the pipes at the back - the black one is overflow from the central heating boiler, the white one is condensate from the boiler and the white on the joint on the guttering is PTFE tape as far as I can see.

The thing is, you could go to the nth degree with any job like this - - I have had advice ranging from getting it bolted back up and the downpipe put back in, to ripping half the roof up and replacing the guttering on half the street. As long as the downpipe goes back to carrying water away and the fascia board goes back to where it should be, I am happy. BT cables are not my problem - they are BT's problem.

If BT's wire has been there for over 11 years without any problem, but this damage appears a few minutes after you have somebody with ladders working on the roof, I would suspect the latter is to blame.

Fair point - proving that to the folks that did the aerial would be troublesome however. The builder chap seems quite friendly and comes recommended by a few folks so hopefully he can help.

Don't touch it FC. That is what's called a headache - BT completely liable as it has clearly been attached to something flimsy. Let your landlord know so they can take it up with BT (don;t mention aerial, just that the BT line has popped the fascia off the wall)

Going to be a bit controvertial here.

If it were me, I'd clean the concerete or whatever it is and paint it white - so that it looks tidy from the ground.

I'd also get someone in to do it - there's no way that I'd climb up a ladder to that height - not after the infamous 'loft incident'.

Builder has been out and has quoted £70 to repair whilst leaving the BT wire undisturbed. Sounds reasonable enough to me.

@clanless - I would normally get it painted as well, but as I have a poorly pressure washer and I am trying desperately pay off credit cards rather than use them, I will bypass that one for now. If this chap does a good job, then I would like to get the ends painted, the windowsills painted and the back wall of the house painted as all of those jobs are now beyond me.

Popped out to pick Mrs C up from work and returned to find a man up at my roof (he got really lucky as it was chucking it down when I left, and started again not long after he finished!)

He is going to put me in touch with his decorator later in the year to have this painted along with the back wall of the house (I need to save my pennies up first) - whilst he was up there, he found that a couple of brackets further along the gutter were loose/out of position and that in turn had seen it not draining as well as it could, and also leaking through the joint in the downpipe t-piece rather than going down the pipe itself, so he fixed those too and cleaned the gutters whilst he was up there, no extra charge.

Really lovely guy who started his own business last year after being furloughed and he basically hasn't looked back.

He definitely is - willing to travel within reason too if you ever need some work done. Very reasonable.
