Well, speaking for myself, I join things I want to have the use of or take part in; and I donate to things I want to help / support.

I'm a member and the magazines are certainly worth it.
I have yet to have a chance and time to go to any of their gardens though.

I was given membership in the late 90's by a visiting american friend. Kept it up for three reasons - 1) the magazine once a month is both interesting and useful, 2) the seed provision each spring gives some great plants - for just £10 and 3) I like visiting both RHS and affiliated gardens for free.

All that for just over £40 a years - great value to my mind.

I joined the RHS as a member after taking the three year course with them.
I seemed, at the time, a natural process, from studying with them and then joining.
The magazine is excellent for picking up new knowledge on numerous plants and techniques in horticultural practices, although I was not surprised at the amount of pages with advertisments on them and these are numerous before getting to the main text.
As for visiting the garden center, which is Wisley in my case, I don't go very often, infact I only go to take my mother for a day out occasionally.
When I have visited the center, I have found it a very pleasant experience and the juices start to flow for more knowledge on these amazing organisms; the flora of this planet.

I got my welcome pack though today with my members card:thumb: although a little disappointed to notice that with the under 25's card I cant bring along a friend for free as well:(... I can understand at roughly half the price they obviously have to limit some of the freebies you get but it would of been nice to know that you don't get all the perks if your under 25 (didn't see that on the signup page:rolleyes:)

I've been a member for about 15yrs, and I dont think I make the most of it, I'm just slightly too far from Wisley to make it a simple drop in job.
And the M25 is bad enough to put anyone off.

I also dont find the magazine as interesting as I did, but thats probably down to me.
Dont think I've even taken this months out of the plastic bag yet.
Somehow the RHS still seems to have that "air of superiority" and eleteist attitude thats a real "put down" to anyone who just likes to grow plants.
But they did help me out once, so I'd better not say too much.:D

I go along with Whis4ey, I'm also too lazy to cancel my membership, I wonder how many are like us?:)

"I wonder how many are like us"

Describes me pretty much to a T. I rarely read the Mag; didn't know tht I could get free seeds before reading it here. Occasionally go to Wisley (friends live nearby), usually forget to take my RHS card with me!

However, the two of us do like to go to Chelsea, and its for that reason mostly that we keep membership, plus the occasional visit to something where I do remember the card ...
