Got 4 qualified liability then :snork: , college doesn`t teach how to use a router (apparently), laminate and so on , none of them is able to make a simple router jig or even a simple task of routering 3 inches and a vision panel in a door .........and I still wonder why I have to do 60 hrs a week :gaah:

I would recommend the Aldi/Lidl equipment 'German Technology" my husband swore by them "Vorsprung Durch" and all that ,they make tree good machinery, I have never had any problem with the electrical white goods either.

Sorry Guys , but the German quality is now gone , some of the best power tools you can get are festool , got one of the sanders + hoovers 10 years ago and last me 8 years almost a record , got the same 2 years ago and they have spend more time in Berlin that on my bench , everything is changed and a nationality or make is not a guarantee anymore.

      Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I have priced it up at the mill I am getting the wood from and they want £1.50 a meter plus VAT. The wood itself isn't any where near that per meter and that is why I thought about doing it myself. I think I will make a few calls to some more joiners today. I was originally going to use a table saw, but these are £90 a day to hire. With the cost of paying for the grooves to be done or hiring tools its starting to become a non viable project due to cost.

Couldn't agree more. I have worked for a German car manufacturer for over 20 years and the quality is no longer what it once was.

I wish this thread was two years ago, I bought a Router for joining my kitchen worktops and having researched it I thought theres loads of things I can do with it, so I paid for a half decent one. I've used it once since then to join my Son's kitchen worktop. This is another power tool to sit on the shelf in the workshop in it's box. Should have hired one

Ok, so are we talking £1.50 a mtr for prepared timber with a groove run in it.

        What timber?
        What size?
        What section?
Might be good to buy the timber froma timber yard prepared, and then look up a local joinery and get them to groove it, not sure on the quantity but just running a groove is easy on a spindle.

Rusty , what about a skill saw?
the blade is 3 mm wide , they usually come with a guide fence and you can adjust the depth .
cheap one are available from amazon or screewfix.

The timber is 2x2 treated timber at just under £1 per meter, then it's an extra £1.50 plus VAT to run the groove up. So this then turns into £3 a meter for the timber with the groove in. So the price of the timber has trebled. I can get the timber elsewhere for slightly more but they have no facility to run the groove I need. So if I have to pay £1.80 a meter for the groove the project price gets to expensive. It goes from £80 for timber to nearly £240. It's just not a viable option when the polycarbonate is added and fixings etc it is nearly £400. I need to make a few calls else to price up a joiner to run the groove, I wanted to do it today but had no time, job for tomorrow when my son is at nursery.

That sounds expensive, see now why you were thinking of the router.

Just going off on a tangent, but I think you would be better putting the Poly in a rebate and then beading it in.
You can then bed it on silicone or glazing tape to make a water proof join.

Any replacement in future years would also be easier, although I know polycarbonate has a long life.

Not that that would reduce the price, it would possibly increase it, I'm afraid.

Rusty , if we talk about 2x2 , a spindle will do the job , or even a trimmer will work fine ,
you live too far away otherwise I would have done at work for you.
I think you need to create a groove for the polycarbonate to slide in a 6x6mm ,
the router is too heavy to work in and the project will be too expencive.
can you not use normal 2x2 , using clear correx and cover the screw with alluminium angle?
