Pro Gard, the plan is to grow these trees to around 8ft. Is it safe to assume that the spread will be around the same ? Cheers...freddy.

Should be, Obviously you can contain it by pruning.

only just noticed this thread and info might be a bit late, but i noticed the local £stretcher had various fruit trees in yesterday, all around 6 foot tall and root balled. some were just starting to show leaf buds. They were £4.99 each.

I didn't take a great deal of notice at root stock etc cos I wasn't really looking at them other than to notice they were a great price.

they also had soft fruits in for £1.99

Thanks for the info glenw. Like you said, a bit late now because they`re already en-route(like my french?). I dont know what it is, but I dont like bargains, maybe I`m suspicious that I`m not going to get as advertised, but.....that`s just me. Cheers...freddy.

Hi folks. Well, the trees arrive tomorrow so I have finish preparing the ground. It`s pretty much all cleared of weeds and roots. The soil seems to have good depth with no sign of clay. My question is, should I firm down the soil ?(bearing in mind that it`s now quite soft) Also, considering the apparent good quality of the soil, do I really need to add anything ? Cheers...freddy.

Firm around the base of the trees after planting. Id stick in a handfull of bonemeal or a shovelfull of compost or manure.

    Victoria.. good.
    Conference.. good
Malus is the family name for all apples, a crab apple is usually bought for ornamental purposes, though, obviously they can be used to make crab apple jelly.
Braeburn I need to check up on.

Braeburn needs a pollinator from the following.
    Chivers Delight.
    Dr Harvey.
    Ellison`s Orange.
    Grren Roland.
    Jordan`s Weeping.
    Red Ellison.
Vicar of Beighton. Hope this helps, Dee.

    Hi guys.

Hate to butt in, but the crab will pollinate the braeburn(which are apparently self-pollinating anyway.)

    Nick.

Well, 'reasonably self-pollinating', whatever that means.....
