Are pears worth it?

    Just to update this thread in case it helps someone else.

    I found that the ripening period off the tree was crucial - I packed them in shallow cardboard boxes with a sheet of newspaper scrunched around each, like apples I suppose, and put them in an unheated pantry - but was quite long. This year I had a lot of pears and packed them in bunches pretty much within a 3 week period to try to not have such a glut. It took roughly 4-6 weeks for them to ripen once picked, and once ripened they had to be eaten within a week but perhaps staggering taking them off the tree was useful in extending eating season. Putting them in the fridge speeded up this process a bit.
    It was a success though as we were eating pears (stewed, poached, as-is, tart) for a good few months and stewed and froze some portions too.
