I'm leaving that rather nonsensical quote/reply to show what's happening with the new Xenforo release.

Putin may or may not be as much of a nutter as Stalin, but he's under control and not controlling.

When you've fought along side of the American army, you can tellnme whats there like,
I worked along side them in Iraq and 3 tours of Afghanistan, they still think they are the best, there mainly only friends with us for our special forces, SAS, SBS, PARAS and MARINES.
I know exactly what a mercenary is as I've been approached to be one.
A lot the the money that supported the IRA came from America as they sometimes used M16s

The Americans allowed us to refuel at their base on Ascension Island. They rent the island from us!

I think he's actually filled his staff with his ex KGB cronies... Not a good start.
I'm not about to start knocking the Americans for stepping in when we and other 'developed nations' do the same all over the world. The theory is simply that we see ourselves as above all that silly violence stuff but I'm instantly reminded of Michael Winner saying 'Calm down, dear' and who wouldn't get peeved at that... Ostensibly we fight for the underdog but the practical matter of money always gets in the way:(
For what ever reason though, the pro-Russia community is gaining confidence and becoming more and more boisterous. Is in retaliation of the pro-Ukraine bunch or are they being 'encouraged' by Russia forces? This is easily how the war could start and Russia can claim they had nothing to do with it.

This is just embarrassing. Now the EU is bribing Ukraine to not back down.

It couldn't be more obvious what this is about. No wonder Russia is upset. They're in a game of tug of war with them on one side, and an embarrassingly sly empire of bureaucrats on the other.

You're right - it couldn't be more obvious; reminds me somewhat of the stranger danger type scenarios that we used to scare us witless as kids - - {creepy bloke wrings his hands} 'never mind that nasty country, why don't you come and see what we have for you to play with......'

Just goes to prove how corrupt almost everyone in any position of government is as far as I am concerned.

Why does the EU want to help out a "debt laden country"????
Dont we have enough of them already?

This is something I have often wondered, and have yet to find anything even close to a logical answer, but then as we know, the EU is often illogical, so maybe we're looking at it from the wrong angle, trying to apply common sense and all.

There was a very tenuous propaganda event on telly last night that might come within a million miles of a vague reason. It was a special edition of 'Food Unwrapped' (you know, the documentary series that explains where much of our every day groceries come from). Apparently a lot of our cheap chicken products come from Ukraine. The hint seemed to be, we need to look after Ukraine if we want to keep eating cheap minced chicken based products. That's the best I've seen so far. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me that Ukraine has great hidden wealth, or the best science and engineering skills and equipment, or perhaps a formidable military setup or something that would be of great benefit to the union, but so far, its just minced chicken based products so far.

There is an oil and gas infrastructure running through Ukraine on its way to western Europe and Britain, but the Russians own and control that, and we have no chance of surviving any attempt to steal from the Russians, so I can't see that that's got anything to do with this one, so that takes us back to, cheap minced chicken based products again.

Wasn't it Ukraine that had all those old rusting nuclear powered ships and subs just rotting away in port a few years back, or am I getting mixed up with another part of Russia.

The US is starting to export Shale Gas as of next year.

I blame the situation in the Ukraine on our president Barraco Barner :roflol:

I don't think it's about chicken (erm?) or gas (we can eventually get enough from US and others) or even the black sea fleet (new base being built for some time in Russia for relocation).

This is about perceptions. Europe is seen as a threat to Russia and so Russia want to have strategic control over as much land mass as possible to try and counter. It's insane. They hate to see a previously soviet owned area go over to the EU side and lose that buffer that is Ukraine & Crimea.

The influence the soviets had should not be underestimated and it carries on as the mindset is established - distrust of the West and complete control at all costs at all times. Any opportunity to regain that from now-independent states is jumped at.

Of course the EU want more ties (Europe is still being 'built') and yes I'm sure the gas line is influencing some decisions but this is not us picking on Russia. Don't forget that until the black sea fleet is moved, then they need and require access to sevastopol for their activities down into the mediterranean.

There's so many strands to this it must be giving whitehall et al a blinding headache!
