It's also because the tree had been very stressed earlier on in the year during the long drought.

The soil in my little Kentish garden is very sandy, easy to dig (even easy to weed) but water-logged? Never. I dig in home-made compost, I practically have the local riding schools and stud farms queuing up to give me their well rotted manure heaps but, somehow, it's still not quite enough. It may have rained for weeks on end, but when I put some plants in on Sunday, (having watered it well the evening before) 3" down and it was bone dry. So bad is it that I've even been known to add water retaining crystals to some of my smaller beds!

My toms got incinerated but my new number one enemy since the rain stopped is cabbage white butterflies - my brassicas are getting eggs all over and as fast as I can squidge them, more pop up! And I go away on Saturday...

      I hope so too.
They are in my new raised bed, and I would rather they used the energy to grow, not replaced damaged leaves!

I have an invasion of blackfly on dahlias, salvias, Camellias etc.etc. They breed, with the encouragement of their friends the ants, at such an alarming rate, you daren't even go off to the PC to moan about 'em on GC.
Whilst I posted this, another 1000 were probably created:wallbanging:
