Aah, we've got a couple of possiblities then, the word Gare in French originally meant port or harbour, but Gar in Anglo Saxon meant Spear, could be refering to the shape of the land.

Staithe is easier, its Old Norse for landing place, which is more likely up your way.

No idea what Jack is on about though, do you want to ask him or shall I? :snork:

I was thinking about this, and I wonder if the confusion arises partly from the fact that the south gare is partly man made. The Tees wasn't deep enough to carry large ships, so it was dredged out in a massive engineering effort, and much of the spoil was piled up to make the sticky out slither of land you see on the map on the south side of the Tees mouth. That sticky out bit is the south gare. The north gare is, as far as I know, entirely natural. I hear far less reference to the north gare than the south, hinting that possibly its not really called that, and people only call that because you can't have a south gare unless there's a north gare too:)

I have no idea what Jack said either:)

A bit like West Bay then, its only when you start wondering where East Bay is that you find out it was re named by the railway company as they thought no one would want to go on holiday in Bridport Harbour.:)

      What'cha talking about Jack?:)

I wondered where all this was going when I read #1, look where it's finished. I never watched anything like these, I must have lead a sheltered life!

Yes, 'Bridport Harbour' sounds like some muddy harbour with stacks of smelly crab pots all over these place full of dead whelks rotting in the sunshine.
