Ajuga .... thats the one!! Thanks Roders :) Not a name I would have easily remembered but yes it was the same thing I seen at the garden centre.

The one I seen though wasnt trailing, so obviously there are different types of Ajuga and the one I seen wasnt a trailer, but some are maybe ??

Will hopefully get some photos today of mine :)

Sam, they are simply gorgeous. :gnthb:
They will be a lovely bright sight in the dull winter.
I see you plant into the sides of the baskets too, that makes them look much fuller. I will try that on my next one.

    thanks Kath :)

I only plant the sides of the big basket as it doesnt have a fixed liner. It took about 30 violas and then about £15 worth of other stuff to make it look that full though .... although looking at it today I see a few gaps I should have squeezed some more into !

How are your baskets coming along ?

Hi Sam, I have done some smaller ones with pansies and mini daffs. The big basket at the front is still flowering so I will leave that until it is dying off.
It is expensive isn't it? :hehe:

Sorry, Sam, but somehow I seem to have missed your earlier reply to my suggestion. However, looking at what you've planted, I'd say that your choice of plants is excellent. I'd have never have thought of putting euonymus in a hanging basket, but it works pretty well. Potty, I like the ajuga in the baskets, too. I've got the baskets, the plants, the compost and now the ideas, thanks everyone...

That's it! Got the ticket from Mum's earlier but a bit uncertain now as the ticket says it is upright but the lady in the garden centre definitely said it was a trailer as Mum heard her too and bought it for a trailer. Either way I'm sure it will look nice.

I did two matching baskets and have one each side of the front door but spent £32 on plants - it's an expensive habit! Does anyone grow their own winter bedding or is it more hassle than it's worth?

I dont grow my own bedding plants, pruely because I havent the space of knowledge to do so.

My mum, however, is planning on buying a greenhouse so that she can grow all her own bedding plants as between us we spend an absolute fortune in the summer!

That will be the best of both worlds for me ... cheap plants (ie only the cost of seads) without having to do any of the hard work getting them to grow lol.

My mum never bothers with winter plants as much though ... so will still have to convince her to grow mine :)

    Thanks Kathy.

They've grown so much already, I'm really pleased. The pansies have gone wild and seem to double by the day. My two year old announced tonight that "mummy's flower's have all got happy faces" which gave us a giggle as we knew exactly what she meant!

I went back to the GC this weekend and couldn't believe how little was left. The winter bedding had really been picked over, am pleased we got stocked up early.

I need to get some nice colourful bedding for the wendy house windowboxes next but the summer display (white bacopa and pink bizzy lizzies) is still so pretty it might be a while until it needs changing.

Oh and the green trailer is creeping jenny - thanks to whoever sussed that one out, GC still had a few in.

Your hanging baskets are beautiful, Sam and a credit to your gardening abilities. :thmb:

My own two baskets are slow to grow, and to be honest I was nearly tempted to buy two ready made baskets, the woven hazel types, from Aldi when I saw them today. But this is cheating, or at least that's what I tried hard to convince myself that it was.:hehe:

I think that yours shows everyone just how good violas and pansies are in baskets and tubs.
