Well obviously I'm not really an elephant, as I'm sure the more perceptive among you have already worked out.
          A brief explanation.
I am blessed with a rather large nose, inherited from my father (genetics has a lot to answer for). He was a keen gardener who taught me a lot of what I know and was known to all his mates at work as 'Trunky'.
As I seem to have reached that age when I find I am rapidly turning into my father, I thought why not?

I once knew someone who studied Italian at university and eventually moved to Italy permanently. Her mother came to stay for a while but after the first week she burst into tears. It turned out that she thought her daughter must be miserably unhappy because all she did all day was argue and fight with her Italian husband. The daughter was mystified. They weren't arguing at all, she explained. They were just having a normal Italian conversation!

That is exactly right, at first when you do not know what is going on it is quite disturbing and intimidating/threatening
But it is just the way

I have an Italian hair dresser Barber I use here at home

You wanna youra air cutte you tella me watta you want not just sit in bloody chair how do I know whatta you wanna, no whatta you wanna you old bunger
you wanna your air cutte or no you wanna shave tella me

I now understand after many years that there is no yes or no or clipped conversations, they say it how it is
I have a little Italian language, but not enough to really partake in battle :-)
I just wish I was as fluent in Italian as he is in English Shameful really

Jack McH (My tangents are killing me again)

Something similar happens to Icelanders, since they are used to talk in the wind and rough weather in general, they tend to be quite loud and decisive when they talk, so especially if you don't understand what they are saying, you might think they are angry...

You're being far too modest, John. In that wig you could pass for Nigella Lawson.
