The three I have are Fargesia Murielae. I bought them when I saw them for two reasons: there was a lovely planting idea in a GW mag a few years back featuring it and it was a bed I wished to recreate at some point; secondly, they were reduced :heehee:.

Now, do you think I can find that magazine article with the planting idea in it? :dunno:  :gaah: :heehee:

I still need to find the right pot size for them. I notice @ARMANDII that your pots are not especially tall, but quite wide. Does this mean they are fairly shallow rooted?

If you put them in plastic pots M you will be able to see when they need dividing/re-potting the roots will bulge the pot out, it you put them in a pot pot you wont be able to see and might have to smash the pot to get them out,

I had to cut the pots of mine they looked like this,
              Capture.PNG
Mine was in 18ltr pots and 11ft tall.

                  Good idea! :blue thumb:

Mine are not as mature as yours and when I repotted them, on the day of purchase, their roots were nothing like as thick as yours. But, it is certainly a good point and one I shall bear in mind.

I rather like the look of these containers (but in black):

Just been pot wrapping a couple of my black boos just in case the "The Beast from the east" pays me a visit. Used cold water jackets on them this time. IMG_20180224_145222551.jpg

I noticed in the garden center the other day you can buy frost free pots, unsure how well they work,

Mine are in bottomless barrels if they die i will just replace them with something else, but there looking in good shape this year atm :).

Well, the roots of Bamboo, "M" ,are fibrous and thin and can go to a depth of around 3ft, while the rhizomes from which the Bamboo grows probably only go down about 6 to 12 inches. I originally used the conventional wide taller pots but found that the wind would topple the bamboo over, so I deliberately bought the wide low profile pots to lower the center of gravity which has cured the problem. I do need to keep an eye on them to make sure they don't dry out, but then we have to do that with any pot or container.:dunno::snorky:

Hmmm, reading this thread it seems I'm going to have fun digging out the large bamboo in my front garden, it's quite dense and about 4ft across. Will it be as difficult as removing a pampas grass?

Hi S, ive never removed any but good advice here.
                                Bamboo control/RHS Gardening

                                Eradicating the whole plant

                                • With very tall bamboos, which can be difficult to spray, cut down canes to soil level in late winter and then apply a glyphosate-based weedkiller (e.g. Scotts Roundup Ultra, Bayer Tough Rootkill, Bayer Garden Super Strength Weedkiller or Doff Maxi Strength Glyphosate Weedkiller) to the young growth in late spring and early summer. Several treatments may be needed
                                • Alternatively, cut canes to ground and treat with a stump and root killer containing glyphosate (e.g. Scotts Roundup Tree Stump & Rootkiller, Bayer Tree Stump Killer, Doff Tree Stump & Tough Weedkiller and Westland Deep Root Ultra Tree Stump & Weedkiller) or triclopyr (Vitax SBK Brushwood Killer). Treat foliage of any regrowth
