Well thats surprising, as when you dig them up there only seems to be the one base plate.

A bit like a cluster of daffodils

I shall have to watch next year and see at what stage the one growing point divides

Pull them apart and you will find each has it`s own root system.:old::gnthb:

Fascinating stuff. Keep up the banter you guys! That's one of the things I enjoy about vegetable gardening, you can always learn something more about even the apparently most simple of plants from listening to the experience of others. Googling is OK as far as it goes, but for the really interesting specialised stuff you can't beat a forum of experts (or those aspiring to become experts!).

I would still recommend sowing from seed if for no other reason than "running to seed" is more prevalent in sowing sets, growing from seed is easy and the seed is widely available! :)

Sorry, I had a very bad experience growing onion and shallot sets last season, probably down to the awful weather but although disappointing, I achieved much better results growing from seed.

I'm not growing garlic this coming season because for the last 2 seasons "Rust" and "White Rot" have decimated my plants and it's dirt cheap to buy at Costco LOL

Vince, how many bulbs do you get from each seed grown plant?

Its just that I've only ever grown shallots from bulbs, and I do know that there are a fair few that run to seed:)

Vince, if you have White Rot, DO NOT plant ANY of the onion family there. Treat the ground with Armillatox or Jeyes Fluid.
