Its PVC double lined on the panels and it has an inner pvc roof and a single layer top roof to stop the rain. It does have some drafts for ventilation but when the sun comes out it traps the heat and manages to hold mid 20's most of the time. In spring the bananas get a good start as the house can top the 30's with a good March :D

wow! Banaman, words fail me! Your gardens' fantastic!!! You put a lot of time & effort into it and its paid back in full. Tell me this, I'm just back from Tenerife & the banana trees are in abundance, full of fruit, but wots the big avocado shaped thing at the bottom of the fruit trusses? Is it the flower and if so, what does it look like when its fully open? Also, I'm buying my other half a tree fern for xmas and you just solved my problem for overwintering it. Ever thought of opening your garden to the public?

Hi dixy, the flower stem emerges fully packed with petals and flowers at the base of each petal. What happens is that the huge petal packed head opens to reveal flowers which become fruit, and then the petals fall off leaving a ribbed appearance to the stem. At the end it just runs out of steam leaving a far smaller petal cluster.

The insult to the flower ending is that that stem dies.

Cheers macleaf, it flowers for 9 - 10 months because of the slow winter progress. It is one of the most satisfying and rewarding plants I have ever grown. Not including my current flower, I have stems scheduled to flower 2007 to 2008 and 2008 to 2009, weather permitting. [IMG]
