I only divide when the clump gets old and a bit worn out.
Then I take a few strong ones off from around the outside.

They usually need to be quite large in order to root and get away well.
I've never been able to save a division that I've taken before it has at least a couple of roots of its own, usually by that time they are a couple of feet or more tall.

Hi Loli, I think they were Canna's (Musafolia grande) I gave you - they get nearly as big as bananas :) Glad they are looking good this spring.

My Ensete 'Maureliis' are really starting to take off. These three and several more are the result of the propagation outlined at the start of this thread. I have been really pleased with the results. But my record is not perfect. Several overwintered satisfactorily at 10C in my conservatory as plants. But a large one, whose top growth I had cut off, was left in a pot and hasn't re-sprouted - though it feels firm and doesn't look rotten. I also overwintered several as bare, frost free, corms. Two re-sprouted quite happily, a large one has not re-sprouted from its main growing point but has grown 2 or 3 pups, and a fourth one has totally failed although, it too, seems firm.

Other bananas, all overwintered inside, are doing well but grow more slowly. These include a Musa velutina, and lasiocarpa. For the first time I have overwintered a Dwarf Cavendish. This has got me excited as a friend who gardens nearby at Ripley Castle, grows them in a big greenhouse and gets them to fruit.

My two basjoos were growing strongly, until I put them outside about 3 weeks ago when the wind broke the top stems. They had obviously been growing too soft inside. They are putting out new rollers now, so I suspect they will recover OK.

Great results @PeterS and looking fantastic :dbgrtmb:
Better than one of my overwintered ones which rotted so I sliced it off to the base.
Now I've started a new trend bonsai ensete

Is that the one you sliced off Mowgley - because its looking very good.

I haven't got the hang of them yet. There is clearly a main growing point in each plant, though if you slice it up you can encourage other growing points as well. When I cut my original plant into four segments, one of the segments clearly had the original growing point and grew very strongly the next year. It grew a few pups as well. The other segments just grew pups ( ie small side growths).
