That's interesting to know Richard. Everyone else talks about bananas, but their climates are usually warmer. Ours must be the same.

The bajoos and a few others that can be grown over here are from mountainous place from what I have read so they are used to the cooler
Temp and even some frost too it's mainly the wet rotting them in winter you need to look out for

Very nice Richard. That one in the corner is a really good size. You will have all the neighbourhood children round - scrumping bananas. :snork:

I went to Durham University Botanic Gardens yesterday with a gardening tour. They have a tropical house, with an M. accuminata with both a big purple flower and bunches of yellow bananas - lovely. Mind you, it was pretty hot and humid in there.

I have a Musella lasiocarpa inside my conservatory and it has really started to grow strongly, with two or three pups. I also have Dwarf Cavendish and a M. velutina, they both look very happy - but both are growing very slowly. Perhaps like the lasiocarpa they will grow slowly to a certain size then put on a real spurt.

I used to have a Musa velutina when I lived in the tropics. If it's any consolation it was slow growing there too, though it's one of the smaller species anyway and can fruit when small.

Gotta get my Maurelii sorted soon, always seems a shame to cut them back.

Went round it with a spade a few weeks ago to sever some of the roots, the final lift will be soon I guess.

                        Richard - that's a wonderfully big Maurelli.

I have started to put mine to bed too. I am trying a multi pronged approach this year.
I will cut back three as above and store them frost free in the loft.

                        2015_10160004.JPG
For the first time I will try to overwinter these two in my sun room at 10C, where they should keep growing slowly. These had reached the 8 feet ceiling, but I have cut the leaves back to half the height, and hope that they will continue to grow and be off to a better start in the spring that the ones stored frost free in the dark.

I also have a few small ones that will remain in their pots in the same room. And I will try to propagate from one in the same way as I did at the start of this thread.

Must start thinking about getting mine dug up, but the forecast for the next week and a half looks ok not below 7'c. Got 4 too overwinter this year

I would love to try this but I'm too scared of losing my banana

Do they come back ok from dormant storage then Peter
