Try mail order! I can recommend Beeches nursery especially - it is good because you can really plan what you want/need and don't end up with impulse buys. OK you have to pay for the P&P, but the plants are cheaper, well grown and the choice is vast. Also this is exactly the right time of year to put an order in.

Or grow from seed - Derry Watkins has some fab things and is v. reasonable price-wise. Otherwise, for basic stuff there's always Wilkinsons....!

We have four centres close buy which I use for different reasons, the closest is Trelawney and I go there if I'm in a hurry, they sometimes have the odd bargain but gift department seems to dominate. Holmeleigh have cheap bird seed and a good selection of climbers. Of the other two one has become quite expensive since they expanded but very good for bedding plants in the summer and the other is down a track and run by the chap who propogates his own stuff and sells some really interesting and unusual plants, guess which one is my favourite. Celia I find Newquay garden centre pretty good. And if I can ever move to Cornwall, I`ve a standing job offer at Carnon Downs.
