Hmm, did I read somewhere that sweetcorn benefits from a `pre-soak` ?

I've tried pre soaking SC in the past and it has a detrimental effect on germination. The best gemination I've had was almost 100% planted unsoaked in pots of cheap compost.

Absolutely adore beetroot .... as long as it's not pickled ... love it sweet, hot or cold ... I'm not a demanding woman ....

Good for your wellbeing too .... :thumb:

    :lollol:

Beetroot is one of the crops I'm thinking of planting next year - like "Lady of leisure" I like it any way except pickled.

My beetroot didn't do too well. The only one that got to any size was eaten by something :dh: I'll try again this year :)

My ground gets a sprinkling of growmore and that's raked in. A month later I sow the beet seed in drills fairly sp****ly and when they are about two inches high, I thin them out to about two or three inches apart, and further thin them if need be. I'm not interested in growing giants, just good eating size. Like them sweet as they come out of the pot. Not pickled in vinegar, which destroys their lovely taste. I have grown "Detroit" for the last couple of years and they do well in my soil.

I've had a strange year with beetroot. Every time it started to grow, all the leaves were eaten away presumably by slugs, then they would grow some more leaves and they in turn would be eaten away. The seed must have been made of stern stuff because eventually they grew enough leaves to beat the slugs and now look healthy. The beets are about golfball size now and big enough to eat. Never give up!
