See this is what I don't like about nature,it leaves us wondering and fretting:rolleyespink: losing the birds at any time is bad enough but at this time of the year all I think of is they've got through the winter and now's the time they can enjoy the Spring and warm weather .Every night when I check the chooks there's always a couple of young birds in the run adn I'm frantic they get left behind but usually Mum or Dad is sat waiting for them ,even in the dark. When I let them out you can almost hear their relief...

Going back to @Spruce post re the young Owls being incubated one at a time,I saw on Spring Watch where the parents do this so their brood is staggered and should there be a lack of food they'll feed them the weakest:frown:...fascinating stuff...survival of the fittest I suppose...

              DISASTER..............
Just returned from a few days away and returned to an empty nest, well except one dead baby.
              Where did they go?
              Why did they go?
They had no feathers so they didn't fledge.
              Surely not a preditor!
              Is this a common accurance?
              Such is nature....................

it must go on all the time - it's only recently that these cams have been available for all of us.
So sorry to hear this @roders,

So sorry to hear of your loss @roders.

I don't suppose the camera showed up anything to show if a predator had made its way into the nestbox to kill most of the fledglings:scratch:

Our Blue Tits have taken up residence in our terraced nestbox giving the detached residence a miss this year and the babies are just at the cheeping stage which is nice but the problem now is that we have a Magpie visiting the garden so just hope he doesn't cotton on to the chicks or else they will end up as breakfast:sad:

I don't suppose the parent birds will renest in your box for this year if it has been predated And better luck next year:grphg:

Really sorry to read that, @roders

Not totally uncommon though, sadly. There could be a few reasons. If the chicks were poorly, the parents would have killed them and disposed of them (pushed them out). It may have been a different bird looking for a nest site and disposed of the ones in your box. It may also have been a predator. Maybe something spooked the parent birds and they abandoned the nest?

Hope this doesn't put you off birdwatch.

So sorry to hear, I think something has happened to the one or both of the parent/s as where you have the box its like Fort Knox high up on the wall so I cant see anything sneaking in.

Yes always best to go for the deep boxes the woodpecker may poke the head through but the chicks stand a better chance of survival
