Thanks, but apologies for a wrong ID, it was a common Whitethroat, not Lesser.

Just to add to the tally here is one this morning that partly escaped , it flew off just as I clicked the shutter. I wasn't going to post it but two thirds of a Sedge Warbler is better than none. (or is it?)

Thanks Inter! Is that one of Fred Dibnah's sayings....??

"It be reet better by arf to have some crow in tha's pikture that nowt of any crow therein like!"

Fortunately for me, Mr Cookie is faster on the shutter than me and got one of the crow - bribed with some bread!

The birds are fast bloomin' beggars at this lake but the rapid shutter multi shot cannot be defeated by a mere crow!

We get quite a lot of big black birds in the garden but I haven't the faintest what they are - and they are very nervous birds. Are Jays the ones with pretty blue and brown markings that look as though someone stopped painting them when they only got halfway? :)

Yep Jays are very shy but brightly coloured birds - more often heard than seen!

Inter was fortunate to have one in his garden - his thread was brilliant - but I think he is being shy about posting his Jay here!!!

    Inter being shy ?????!!!!!

It took me ages to remember the difference between all the black carrion birds...

Crows - all black with black beaks, black eyes and medium sized.
Jackdaws - silver/grey nape with black cap, white eyes and smaller sized
Rooks, medium - large sized with white/grey beaks but black eyes
Ravens - all black and chunky and very big compared to other carrion birds.

Very simplistic I know - but that's what my ailing brain cell can cope with!

    Thanks for the info Cookie.

I guess we have rooks but they are about the size of the female pheasants (without the long necks and tails :D) and we get a lot of Jays but have not been able to get near enough for a photo.

:thumb: What a beautiful pic of a Jay Glen !

How about a challenge for you... try and photo a Jay in the autumn with an acorn!!

(This girl doesn't ask for much, does she!!!??? ;) )

Only joking - considering how shy and fast they are, this is a wonderful picture.

    On the list it goes!

Ravens are present on Dartmoor but usually more in the less accessible areas of rocky craggy bits miles away from anywhere!

    No probs Shiney:

Here is a pictorial memo jogger for you...

Thanks Cookie :thumb:. I'm still not sure whether ours are ravens or not . I'll have to wait until they come back.

    I know they're not pterodactyls :D

How do I get my pcs on here direct (as I used to) instead of the photobucket link? There is no image button to use.

there is an insert image button on the quick reply box, its the yellow one that looks like a postcard. click on that, it opens a little window for you to put the URL into.

    hope that helps

Strongy - I still find that by copying and pasting the photobucket IMG link - it posts a pic directly. Perhaps somewhere in your User CP, IMG images enabling needs to be checked???
