Shiney! Great photos ... as always!

You've been up the Nile? Was this a trip where you visited the pyramids and tombs of the Egyptian pharoahs, valley of the Kings etc??? If so I MUST start a new thread on - historical / ancient monuments you have visited - I would love to see any photos you have of ancient Egypt and it would give me a chance to post some pics of my beloved stone circles from Britain too!

    Keep the photos Tuten-comin' !!!!

Yes, it was at the same time my thread on Egypt. I've also got digital photos of Hawaiian, Incan, Mayan, Chimu and Moche monuments. All my ancient Roman and Greek photos are in print and would be too much hassle to put onto digital. [IMG] Some of the places I have been are still in the dark ages, and I'm not reffering to anywhere that GC members live - but it could be close [IMG] :D

These were on Big Island, the largest of the Hawai'ian group.

    YAY ! I recognise 2 of these pics - I think!

Flamingoes and a black crowned night heron! I feel I should know the middle one but am having a very slow brain day.

Lovely shots Shiney and as ever I am extremely jealous of all these locations you have visited. You've certainly done this beautiful planet justice in your travels.

This cockerel looks just like a normal one but, as you can probably see, he looks as though he owns the whole area.

This was taken on the island of Kawai'i which is the most northerly of the Hawai'ian group and geologically much older than the others. It is the most lush and tropical because of that and has been used in the making of many famous films (over 40) from South Pacific to Jurrasic Park.

It is a very laid back island and is definitely worth a visit if you are in that part of the world.

They have one, major, wildlife problem on the island and that is wild chickens! There have always been some wild chickens and a lot of domesticated ones, but when they had hurricane Iniki, in 1992, almost all the buildings and coops that housed the chickens were destroyed and the chickens escaped into the wild. This wouldnâ??t have been too bad but a favourite pastime of the Filipino residents was the â??sportâ?? of cock-fighting. Most of these also escaped and interbred with the chickens. This may seem like a minor problem but they have bred so prolifically that they have become a nuisance â?? the island government are even asking for people to put forward ideas on how to deal with the problem. You come across them all over the island, in towns, fields and mountains and they walk around as if they own the place. We were told that they are not very good to eat as they are very lean and stringy.

Iniki was a very ferocious hurricane that reached speeds of 175 m.p.h. and totally destroyed one third of the 20,000 homes on the island and left virtually no property undamaged. The cost of the damage was estimated at $1.9 billion. It occurred on September 11th!!!

    Cardinals - I think!!

Great photos Glen, I have seen both Redstarts here but never had my camera at the time.
I find the Hooded crows' distribution weird as it covers nearly all of Western Europe, Scandinavia, Scotland, Ireland, occasionally Wales but not England!

CM The bird after the Flamingoes is an East African Crowned Crane.
