Feel free to have a go, I am not part of any clique... but I love black plants & all shades thereof... yes I know very few are truly black, but grown with other colours you can get some stunning combinations. I have grown black hollyhocks, black violas, Tulipa "Queen of the Night", Sweet William "Sooty", Cornflower "Double Black" & "Black Ball", Ophiopogon planiscapus "Nigrescens", Phyllostachys nigra, Chilli "Orozco" & "Fillius Blue", Sambucus nigra "Black Beauty", & countless others. Dark/black plants can look stunning with lime greens or silvers or blues or whites & enhance & add a different dimension to planting schemes. I had some black Hollyhocks for instance, spring up with some uninvited (but not unwelcome) evening primrose - the acid yellow & black looked fab, but hey, this is something that floats my boat.
"Black Magic & Purple Passion" by Karen Platt is a good read, & there is even an International Black Plant Society http://www.karenplatt.co.uk/ibps/
Grown in isolation, almost any colour could look dull(even the famous "white" gardens are not wholly white, having silvers, & greens etc, but it is great to experiment with colour as well as form & texture - isn't that what gardening is about? Having fun & playing? [IMG]
I did try growing the bat plant from seed, having seen it at a garden show, but with no luck as yet(waited over a year for something to show :(

I also saw the Black Bat Plant on one of the tropical sites - there is a White one too. I was going to try one next year - mainly because its one that would get the boys' interest!!

Windy - Your Sweet William and green sounds fab!!!

Again - its all about personal taste. I'm not personally a black flowered person, but in the right combination/ situation they can look spectacular!! As with any colour, used in the wrong combination/ situation, they could look dreadful!!
