You need to speak to your ISP @shiney - I know you are in quite a rural location, but that is ridiculous in this day and age.

@Fat Controller they've recently installed a fibre box in the village but have said that although I could connect to the box it would be unlikely to increase it to more than 6 - 8mbps. At an extra cost of £10 per month I don't think it's worth it. We don't really use the computer for anything that needs a faster speed. They say the reason is that we would still have a mile of old copper overhead cables from the box to us.

Such is the joys of rural Britain.... there will come a time where you will need more connectivity, such is the way things are going - hopefully, by then, FTTP will cost much less :blue thumb:

We're the same, they did some repairs a few years ago and before that we only got 1.0mbs, we then lost broadband and we could hear other people talking, so called them out and we had 10 faults on the line, bt wouldn't fix them all so he change the wire to one that wasn't being use and we then got 6mbs but now it's back to 3mbs, it's amasing how much the phone wires around here gets a beating

I've been considering getting bluetooth speakers for 2 or 3 years now, initially thinking of a waterproof speaker for internet radio in the bath(room), then wondering if it could be used as a 'ringer' a couple of rooms away from where my phone's charging. Turbo charging plus batteries that last 2+ days have somewhat eliminated the later requirement.

More recently (using landlines much less as have 'free' mobile calls and out and about a lot) the desire to replicate the conference calling facilty we have on our phone system at home, using a mobile with a portable bluetooth speaker, both at home and out/about.

Anybody use them for those purposes?

Hi @Fat Controller , the thing arrived today.
I put the VM whatsit into modem mode, connected the new one with a cable, then a cable to my lap top.
No internet connection was the message I got, not even with a cable.
I then tried connecting to the new whatsit via wifi, no luck.

I'm obviously doing something wrong, and was a bit scared I couldn't get the VM whatsit back into wifi mode but managed to sort it in the end.

Think I'll leave well alone until the weekend when I'll hopefully have more time.

First thing to do is put the hub back into full mode, then connect the cable between the computer and the hub - if you still have internet at that point, then you can move on.

Step two is to remove the cable from the computer and put it into the new router, and switch the new router on - let it boot and settle, until the lights show that it has a connection. Then, you will need to connect your laptop to the new router as opposed to the hub (keep the hub in full on mode at this point though); the easiest way to do this is via to use the WPS button, but any method will work.

Once you are connected to the new router, set it up the way you want it (you do this by going to the routers webpage - most likely 192.168.1.1 which you type into the address bar of your browser where you would normally type in a web address); once you have done that bit, then navigate to the webpage for the hub - usually 192.168.0.1, and then put it into modem only mode.

I don't know if/when I am working this weekend, but I will let you know when I am about to guide you.

No worries - we can have a chat later in the week, and I will let you know when I am around; worst case, I can ring you and talk you through it as you do it.

I don't want to convolute the train of thought when seeking a solution to a problem but do remember that wifi and bluetooth are both radio frequencies.

If the wifi operates at a channel too close to bluetooth then it will cause interference resulting in either no wifi connections, no bluetooth connections or both.

For this reason, most broadband routers can be manually set to operate at a specific channel within the wifi frequency range.

Before testing live streaming (ie from internet to laptop then to bluetooth speakers), you should first test whether the bluetooth connection is sufficient to play an audio wave/mp3 file to the bluetooth speakers - you may find that the data rate transmission from laptop to bluetooth speakers is less than the wifi connection.

Thanks @misterQ , but I'm thinking from my speed testing that the Wi Fi is pretty poor speed wise, and that is probably the biggest problem.
