Strewth. 12 per metre is way too many - that close you are likely to get box blight and certian to lose a few as they will be too cramped - so you will end up with a hedge with gaps.

If they are Common Box, 5 per metre is plenty. If they are Dwarf Box, then you can go to 7 or 8.

There are pretty clear instruction on box hedging on this site.

    Good luck

Hi Hedgeman. Just looked at that site, thanks. It seems I have a problem, not knowing what type I have. Like I said, it just says Buxus on the pack. Maybe a compromise is in order. Cheers...freddy.

Box is an easy plant to take cuttings from and now is the time! Save money by planting wide and taking cuttings for filling in next year.

Hi, Freddy. My neighbour has a lovely box-hedge ( knot-garden style) just the size you've described, and his main stems are about 8 inches apart. (20 cms). Looks like the critical thing is to know whether or not you've got dwarf box or big box! Lindy.

Dwarf Box -- Buxus sepervirens Suffruticosa is slow growing and has slightly smaller leaves than Common Box Buxus sempirvirens.

    Dwarf 4-6 inches apart
    Common 9 - 15 ins apart

I planted Common 12 inches apart, took cuttings planted cuttings in between, they soon catch up!

also consider' Faulkner' denser, hardier, shiny green leaves and Variegated Box
