Please let us not forget the millions of pounds raised by Jimmy Saville and the public's awareness of Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Perhaps she was dressed up to look much older, I doubt she was wearing her school uniform!!! So what if he did grope her? how small minded are we becoming? Back in the sixties my sister and I used to travel on a crowded tube train every morning from Mile End to Liverpool Street and there was often gropers on the train, it happened to me more often than I can remember, my sister & I used to be in fits of giggles over it!!!
These people need to grow up and get a proper sense of perspective. :old:

Weird character, wasn't he? - To say the least.

I think it would be totally absurd not to use the cash for the intended purpose.

Have we gone so PC nuts and mealy-mouthed about the subject of paedophilia that we can't see the wood for the trees here?

I gather it's not at all PC to say so, but I think there's a long continuum of severity in cases of child abuse with murder, violent rape, long term exploitation and coercion of vulnerable, helpless and physically immature children being some of the things at the extreme end.

As far as we know, Savile's activities have mainly concerned physically (if not mentally) mature young people who had some choice in whether they went near to the person who abused them. Also, they were often one-offs, which although damaging, does not seem to me to be quite on the same level as children who have been specifically targetted long-term by a powerful adult, possibly a family member who should have been caring for them. Of course we are not in possession of the full facts and it seems already that there may be exceptions to this.

So, I can't help but view his activities as being at the less extreme end of the continuum. He's still a distasteful, slimy, disgusting, creepy old perv who should have been put a stop to years ago but I don't see any reason for mass hysteria about it.

And now the net is alight with rumours that a 'Senior Politician' that was a close aide of Margaret Thatcher is about to be 'outed' as a paedophile on Newsnight.

This whole story could get very messy indeed.

        Exactly.

Once again, it is trial by media. Only this time the defendant is unable to offer any defence, on account of his being dead and all that.

No his was not acceptable behaviour
But there is a big difference from someone continually abused, to a one off grope on someone who would use it as bragging rights amongst teenage friends

I do not know IF you were around in the 60's the summer of love etc

Many young girls searched out the top of the pops bands seeking fame and fortune and all they got was a grope, though quite happy with the fact that xxxxx of the xxxx fancied them and groped them
(This is totally different from someone who was ABUSED, Taken advantage of etc)

The fact Saville took advantage of disabled/mentally challenged teenagers is disgusting

The ones he met on TOTP were quite happy at the time for a one night stand, and would have been ecstatic, if it had led to a four week fling with presents etc then ditched

You need to see the difference from ABUSE and the 60's IMHO

It turns out he was a disgusting man, but in the end if we are going down that road
every DJ,Band, and famous young person in the 60's Will be up in court in the next couple of years

There is a big difference between the Life guard at the swimming baths touching up and abusing children in the 60's or long term abuse
To famous young bands and DJ's Getting it thrown at them every night You must see that, One IS ABUSE the other is just what happened at the time

To be honest in the 60's girls wore stocking and suspenders, the top of the stocking was called the giggling line (If you got past that you were laughing)
Just how many boys got slapped at that point, the girl stormed off and put it down to just how boys were OR went ahead Two totally different circumstances

A mate of mine, when we were about 15, pulled a girl of roughly the same age's trousers down in front of everybody in the amusement arcade.

He was a bit fik. To him, it was just a joke, but even I and his other mates realised immediately he'd stepped over the boundary between a joke and bang out of order.

The girl burst into tears, understandably shocked and humiliated.

The girl's older brother punched my mate in the face, and none of us made any attempt to stop him from doing so because he deserved it, and that was the end of that.

Seperately, when I was a young man about town and all that, because it was well after the 70s, when we're already into 'PC era', it was a real nightmare at times trying to work out without causing offence, where exactly you stood. It was common knowledge that people lied about their age in order to get into pubs and clubs. Although the law had a clamp down on under aged drinkers, even supposedly well trained coppers and bouncers were letting people as young as 13 into places, believing they were 18. I was lucky (and I mean really lucky) because I won the affection of a lady 11 years older than me quite early on, and she became my serious other half for much of my youth before we fell out and I ultimately met my missus, but it is a running joke within my circle that a mate of mine, who didn't know my younger sister at the time, chatted up my sister in a club when my sister was only 13 at the time. The poor lad was mortified when he found out, and understandably so, but truth is, my sister went to great lengths to make herself pass for 18, and our older sister was present at the time, supervising our younger sister, and all the older sis could do was laugh and fuel the wind up.

I'm not for a second protecting Jimmy Saville. Truth is he was clearly at least a bit weird and creepy. I mean kids would sit on his knee while he smoked a cigar on telly. My point is twofold. 1) We don't really know what he did, and 2) We don't really know what the girls that are accusing him did.

This whole thing is a matter that should now be left to due legal process to resolve. Nobody can benefit from a witch hunt.
