Regularly see bread makers as Ziggy says on freecycle or car boots is the other place where people seem to almost offer them for nothing... I I might give one a go at some point, but my Nan loves hers and bakes a couple loaves when people visit

I think you have to be really quite accurate with the measuring, especially the liquid. It's all about the ratios being right. And making sure the fast action yeast & the water don't meet before kneading. I use the recipe that comes with the panasonic, which I have made so many times I can give you I think without consulting the book. Always comes good but particularly when I stick a spoonful of oatbran or oats in it. Anyway for a medium loaf, be careful of it being a tsp or a tbsp ( ahem not that I've mixed the two up on autopilot before).

1 tsp fast action dried yeast
      500g strong white flour
      1.5 tbsp milk powder
1 to 1.5 tsp (not tbsp!) salt
25g fat of your choice - butter, marg, olive oil. You could use lard but that would be minging.
1tbsp sugar - I've found it's not fussy as to what type.
      350ml water

Add to the pan yeast, then flour, then the other ingredients. This is a quantity for a medium loaf on the basic loaf bake cycle of 4 hrs.

I just typed that from memory. How many of these loaves must I have made?

I've attached a pdf of a recipe that I got from All Recipes UK, and it seems to give consistent results.

I've also got a pdf copy of the instruction manual for the SD254 & SD255 Panasonic machines, with recipes - if its useful for anyone, please ask and I will happily attach.

Having put the buying of a breadmaker on hold because of my sick sewing machine needing repairs, it was not a bad thing. Today I've been given one that's nearly new along with a barbecue. :) I won't be picking it up until later in the week, so I don't know what make it is yet.

So, I presume there's a 'best' type of flour?

To be honest, there doesn't seem to be a massive difference - I tend to stick to the supermarket own brand stuff, and its never let me down. If anything, the branded wholemeal (Hovis for example) is slightly more textured and flavoursome than the cheaper stuff, but it really is in hair splitting territory.

French flour "Type 55" is reckoned to be one of the best for a crisp white baguette but you can't buy it in UK
I can see it now Sheal Its got only one eyeball though - on the right !!:roflol:

there is a massive difference between a cheap flour and a good one, but that is of course if one is able to tell the difference.

I can't. I can tell when a bread is made with flour treatment agents, but if you were to put a dove's farm wholemeal flour loaf and an asda own brand wholemeal flour loaf both made in a bread maker in front of me....I wouldn't be able to tell by taste.

If I was working by hand there might be some difference in how they work. But I'm not. So I don't worry about it ;)

knocked up the Ciabatta mix in the Breadmaker then transferred it to a tin for final rising and decorating. Ready for the oven:

and after baking. Will be cut into 12 squares and taken to a BBQ tonight:

I'm liking the look of that Jenny. Must get mine out and give it a try - don't think it has seen daylight for about 6 years.
