What does make me titter is all the talk about how bad it is that we would have to comply with the EU standards for goods/services without any say as to how those standards are developed.

Well, yea - it's called a trade agreement - any country that signs to trade with the EU has to comply with their standards - eg. CE safety standards - we already comply with 'their' standards. Let's be brutally honest - even in the club we are 1 voice amongst 27 others - what say do we really have as a member - diddly squat.

Any deal we do come up with - we can change it - it's not set in stone.

I wish that was true, clanless:dunno:. Any deal agreed by the UK and the EU will be legally binding and recognised as such by UK law and the European Court of Justice. Which is why should we stay in the Customs Union under the conditions that the EU wants, i.e: Both parties [the UK and the EU] have to agree for the UK to leave the Customs Union, so if the EU disagrees the UK will have to stay in the Customs Union subject to the rules and standards and unable to seek trade agreements outside the EU:wallbanging: Getting the EU to agree a definite leaving date for leaving the Customs Union is proving an impossible job as they seem determined to block every proposal put by the UK in order to have the upper hand.

I agree with you but it was voiced to me by a banker customer before the referendum - I discounted it as not important to me and not the big problem that it actually is, but bugger me he was right! Financial concerns were far more important to me and my thinking was certainly narrow.

Anyway, the support for a united Ireland continues to grow and under the Good Friday Agreement the Secretary of State For N.Ireland is obliged to offer a referendum to the people if there is sufficient appetite for it so it may not be an issue anyway. As someone on the radio said last week, how can any Brexit supporter who called to be free of the grip of foreign powers, to regain independence and to take back control deny Ireland that chance?

Well, I haven't seen any discussion in the past year or two, or three between any of the Northern Irish governments about holding a re-unification referendum, have you? At the moment Northern Ireland Government isn't even operating at the moment and anyone bringing up the subject now is just pushing their own agenda.

It is not for the 'government' of N.Ireland to decide, it is the Sec of State for NI.

Far from it. To deny the possibility of it is simply burying ones head in the sand. May and JRM have had a spat over it. It is becoming the subject of political commentary...............

Could Brexit mean a referendum in Northern Ireland?

A United Ireland Is Five Years Away. We Need To Start Planning For It Now

It is coming, like it or not.

          Apropos of nothing!

This is what my pal Cicero said nearly 2000 years ago. :old: :rolleyespink:

"The Budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome will become bankrupt. People must again learn to work
instead of living on public assistance." - Cicero, 55 BC

Not a great deal of difference from nowadays - especially Rome.

I must say, I find this difficult to believe :rolleyespink: - joining a custom union yes - but not leaving. That's the same as saying that I can only leave my energy supplier if he agrees to me leaving - unfair and probably unenforceable imho :spinning:.

More importantly my cotoneaster is looking wonderful :snorky:- orange/red leaves - like it's on fire :dbgrtmb:.

                I agree, but it wasn't for another 400 - 500 years :)

Any negotiated and signed agreement (as long as it does not involve criminal acts) is a contract - completely enforceable at the appropriate level.
