Outside of this discussion, just a brief clarification on bent bananas and similar :)

Bent bananas weren't banned but it was an exaggeration of one of the Euromyths. The banana trade were trying to get a standard for the classification of bananas so there could be a level playing field on what was Class II, Class I and Extra. It was agreed that the clarification of these would make common sense and 'Extra' meant that they needed to only have a slight curvature and virtually no blemishes. Classes I and II allowed for more or a lot more variation.

As usual, the bureaucrats overdid themselves in the zealous department and made a proposal to classify most fruits and bring those classifications into law. These were never passed as law but got kicked out, when looked at about 10 years ago. The fruit industries wanted some form of industry standard but were stupid enough to ask the EU instead of getting together to work it out. As it happens, most of what the bureaucrats suggested was tidied up, corrected and used and similar guidelines had been in force internationally since before the Common Market.

The whole ideas was to be able to sell the extra distorted ones as seconds. Something that Jamie Oliver tried to get the supermarkets to do more recently.

It was, I think, The Sun that propagated the myths about bent bananas and anything but straight cucumbers being illegal. They weren't to blame for the myth about the British Banger having to be renamed the 'emulsified high fat offal tube', which was in one part of 'Yes, Prime Minister'. The Sun simply propagated myths after the TV series was seen to be so popular. :dbgrtmb:

Should have been obvious from the beginning that level playing fields aren't suitable for bent bananas.

Oh, and just another point about bananas. There's no such thing as a really organic banana bought in the shops. :nonofinger: International law says that they need to be treated before packaging and exporting. It's argued that they're still organic as the only treatment is just a similar thing to running the hands of bananas through a sterilisation bath. so the chemicals are only on the outside.

This is done for a couple of reasons. The main one being that as they are in a hand (a small bunch), bunch or tier (what they call the whole fruit stem mad up of hands) they can harbour noxious insect life. The snakes that tend to live in tiers of Bananas are shaken out whilst still in the fields :blue thumb:. Then, for transportation, they're put into a container that has been air sanitised.

Do those remainers have straighter than normal EU approved bananas?

They look as though they would be classified as 'Extra'.

                Sympathise Freddy.
I think what has happened is the remainers and the leavers are in the same boat, as you say, we end up with the worst of both worlds.
But where our views might differ is that I feel there was far too much infighting across all parties regarding leaving, no one got behind the fact we were leaving, we showed the EU a divided front.

Which they have capitalised on regarding giving us the slightest regard or credibility, so we end up where we are now.
They know that we are divided, and still are, and are playing their cards in that way.

I still feel if May had sorted the cabinet out from the start, with a strong leave content, instead of pretty much 50:50 leave/ remain, then other MP's had followed what their constituents voted, rather than what they personally would prefer, the position at this stage could have been very different.
We showed the EU too many chinks in our armour, so who do I blame?

That bunch of idiots in parliament, House of Lords, and the Commons.

So is it ever worth voting again, not sure, as no one accepts the outcome of a vote anyway, so why bother with another one,....... unless of course the Hierarchy might get the answer they wanted in the first place, and then the scum can all fall inline and do the right thing.

Will someone please explain to me why Tes is taking the draft withdrawal agreement forward. It clearly won't get through Parliament - so why are we continuing to waste time which should be spent preparing for a no deal brexit.

Because the EU have said, well I think it was Merkel, which kind of points out who is pulling the strings for 27 countries, that this is the EUs final offer.
Yeah, find you cant sell us nothing without a heavy import tax on it and you might think again.

Only yesterday they were saying that something as insignificant as the Dutch flower trade has a lot to lose, should their lorries get held up at Dover.

No, they need a good deal as much as we do, it's just that our lot are so spineless and not prepared to call their bluff.

                      An excellent post Pete

The only thing I would add is, I’m not so sure that the EU have that much to gain from division over here? A ‘no deal’ is looking ever more likely, not in their interest I would have thought?

Once all of this is done, maybe the subsequent general election will be just the tonic we all need :)

Only if the parties concerned can come up with some worthwhile candidates.

Unfortunately, I dont think that kind of person gets involved in politics these days.

Politics mainly, these days, is about being good in front of a tv camera and never saying a word out of place.
