That's exactly what the SNP have done re the "once in a generation" referendum we had in 2014 @pete but they would call us disloyal to Scotland plebs:rolleyespink: . The winning vote to remain within the UK had a larger % of the vote than the winning % leave the EU vote had yet whatever the Brexit outcome it's pretty nigh on certain we will have to go through another incredibly divisive vote within the next few years. If that still produces a no to Independence then no doubt they'll find another excuse to run one again and again until they get what they want. I can see VERY troubled waters over the CFP which could directly affect this family. Add in that it is raining yet again and damned cold, can you tell I am somewhat cheesed off?:snorky: but no apology necessary @longk:grphg:

Why not? After all, that is how it has been for decades?

The sticking point, as far as a lot of Brexit supporters see it, is that the backstop agreement has no time limit. It only allows for negotiation until the end of 2020 and then, if no agreement is reached, it goes to an independent adjudicator. Both sides would have to put their points forward and the decision is made by the adjudicator. The EU seem to have already stated their case, and show no signs of budging, and the government hasn't come up with even a hint of a solution that is acceptable to N.I. or other regions such as Malta. There isn't an option within the backstop for the U.K. to pull out.

I think all the other points in the agreement can be sorted out if the parties can agree. I can't see the N.I. situation being resolved.

This leaves the option of No Deal, or a No Confidence vote (with no discernible outcome at the moment), or a referendum with also no discernible outcome.

Well as I said earlier, the term backstop means nothing to me, whatever it is?

In a couple of years the political situation in this country could be very different, probably will be.
Might even be a different colour.

I think the latest term is "kicking the can down the road".

Yup! EU rules assume that a nation wanting to leave would not be so divided. The arrogance of the Cameron government meant that they did sod all groundwork as they did not even consider that they could have been wrong about the result.

              It is.

Re the backstop; It's largely semantics very much fueled by the Unionists. On a personal level you already need acceptable current photo id to travel from the UK to NI. It is not and will not be a back door for immigration. As far as trade goes if a no tariff deal gets done with legislative parity then there is no issue. If not then there may be an argument for making NI a tariff free annex - NI currently receives more in EU subsidies than anywhere in the UK (with the exception of Cornwall and west Wales) so it would free westminster of the burden of maintaining this aid to NI and allow it to spend it in other parts of the UK that will also lose out. Goods shipped from NI to the mainland would be subject to a tariff on the EU derived value, some goods (agricultural being the obvious) without an externally derived element would be exempt. Regeneration in NI could be the net result and the DUP's semantics are worth less than that.
I maintain my belief that the Good Friday Agreement and the relative peace that has come with it must be held sacred.

Everything has to change. This is big enough, and important enough, for that change to be embraced.

I'm sorry but the man is a disgrace!
Not only did he lack the small balls to post a link to the report (find it here) but at best he never bothered reading it, at worst he just plain lied. At no point in that report does it say what he claims about disolution of state parliaments and creating a single federal state - it was simply about economic and monetary matters. In actual fact it was simply a basic template for what became the Maastricht Treaty.
To brazenly lie like that makes him unfit for public office in my opinion. Email sent, odds of a reply naff all but I'll keep you posted.

Not sure. If you mean Jeremy Corbyn it should be noted that he is at heart a Brexiteer, not a Remainer. If you mean Mr Paxman then bring it on as he would tear him to pieces on an article as poor as that was.
