Actually, I think he did, pete, in a strange sort of way. Everyone took him for a Buffoon and blusterer, including me, but it dawned on most people that here was a Politician who spoke the English Language in a blunt way that they understood. A lot of people still think he is a Buffoon and blusterer, but you don't get to be Mayor of London, Prime Minister, a person able to break the 4 year logjam of arrogant, self interested MPs of all parties, jump, go around, climb, breakdown all the barriers that were put before him during his fight to "Get Brexit Done".
I think think the "working class" had had a gutfull of Politicians, their arrogant dismissal of the Referendum, abandoning of all pretence of looking after their constituents, the 4 year chaos in a Parliament that had ceased to operate......and along comes a strange, scruffy blond haired guy, who looks like the usual Conservative and Politician but doesn't speak like one. Instead he tells everyone, including the "working class" at one end and the Conservative "Establishment" MP's at the other that he will honour the 2016 Referendum but doesn't say one thousand words and really has said nothing, like the rest of the MPs. The "working class" like it but don't believe him, while the Conservative Establishment don't like it and don't want it to happen. All that and a extremism Labour Party and SNP, along with the Lib Dems who are complete Remainers facing him while getting stabbed in the back by the Establishment MP's sitting on the benches behind him.
I was mistaken in my original assessment of Boris in the early years as I thought him a Buffoon and fool but watching over the years I realised that becoming a Mayor of London and a Prime Minister takes an intelligent man who's no Buffoon.............but then again who else but a Buffoon would have stood up, fought against his own Conservative Party, the savage hate from the other side of the House, the spiteful, constantly negative TV and Newspaper media and got BREXIT done other than a Buffoon and a fool??:doh:..........and that's why the Conservative and Labour "working class"
    voted for him.:dunno:

It was in such a good state, pete, that she let Labour in because of the bad feeling for Conservatives she left behind.:dunno::wallbanging:

That wasn't my point, pete:dunno: What I was saying is that she left a long lasting legacy of hate and extreme dislike of the Tories by the "working class" that resulted in the 1997 General Election bringing in Labour. She was born in Grantham, Lincs, but changed her accent so that she could speak "wot" like the Queen did while trying to out Queen the Queen and obviously failing. Millions came out of work during the time she was Prime Minister and she and her "Thugs" showed no compassion nor gave any help to get people back into work, and there weren't many in the "working class" that shed a tear when she shuffled off her mortal coil.:dunno:

Watch for the differing approaches of the three mainland contenders in the forthcoming Six Nations rugby. The Welsh have an inner passion for their country. We English tend to be motivated by a certain arrogance, but the Scots' aggression is another thing altogether.

Thatcher was like the curate's egg, good in parts, but the present chaos within party politics is largely down to Bambi Blair if you delve deeply enough?

Absolutely agree on that, Coachman. The Blair and Brown debacle brought us into bankruptcy and all those years of austerity which all the Labour Front Bench seem to have a severe memory lapse over except blaming the Conservatives for the austerity.

                      Sorry Pete My Bad
My figures were what we faced BEFORE WE WENT TO VOTE

FC explains the rest, As in we did not want LAB to gain seats, so Brexit could go ahead
Voting Con up here would be a total waste of a chance, thus SNP got the most votes

Come the 2021 vote here Wee Jimmy Crankie will get the shock when she realises what this last vote was all about, it was NOT for her or her party

But it was obviously Thatchers fault that they got elected ;)

Brown wasn't all bad, he kept us out of the Euro, apart from that I cant think of much other than he was always waffling on about prudence.

Blair was something else and still is the arrogant git that he always was.

I'm not sure I'm right in saying this, not checked facts, but we hated Blair, but he did two stints in the job, and the same with Thatcher.

Does it take the public that long to realise what these are really like, or do they change when they get re-elected?;)

Naw, they just get bored and crave change after a while. Blair and Thatcher stayed in power for long durations as they both has a certain ability that people loved, then got bored with. Perhaps their politics didn't catch up with social needs fast enough?

One of the drawbacks to the 'Forum' format is that it denies publication of more wordy contributions. For my own use I keep some of the more topical ones saved on my computer but not for here on space grounds.

One of them examines the Blair legacy in some depth but, on Brexit, it reminds us that as far back as 2002, no doubt as a sop at the Dispatch Box, he stated that the people of the UK would have to have a vote on continued membership of the EU. Now, however good or bad the individual, the utterances of someone titled 'Prime Minister' will be noted and retained by all those likely to be affected. Typically, he did nothing about it. Brown failed too. Cameron, hamstrung by Clegg, couldn't do it, and it was left until he had the majority to get it through some 14 years later that action was taken. Blair's successes at the Millennium Dome and in Iraq, hard on the heels of a career as failed pop star, failed lawyer, failed Anglican and the most right wing Labour member in history, left the Conservative government without a big enough shovel to clear up the mess he left behind. Full transcript at, (deleted by Armandii), if it doesn't break the rules?
