Broad Beans

Make sure they have plenty of water. I know that with some plants a lack of water can prevent fertilisation.

 

I can't imagine for a moment actually eating the pods of BBs! However I might try cooking them in their pods. I have always shelled them before cooking or freezing.

 

John, if you want to try it, you have to pick them very young, when they're only as long as your finger or not much more. Go on, be a devil!

 

Beans finally appearing

 

I bought some shop ones yesterday, peeled and steamed them but the flavour was very bland, nothing like the ones I had from my neighbour in Australia.

Definitely growing my own now.

I planted some aquadulce last October and have just picked the last of them. I have a crop of Bunyards exhibition which are just starting to mature. I also sowed some more a few weeks ago in cell trays and they are now a few inches tall but I'm wondering whether its worth planting them out now as its quite late for broad beans. HAs anyone else grown them this late in the season? I dont want to take up space in my tiny garden plot if they arent going to crop very well

 

I don't know. I just planted out my second lot of plants about 10 days ago, seedlings of aqua dulce about 5-6 " high. They come up virtually overnight at this time of year so might be worth a try!

 

Tonight we had the last meal from Aquadulce, sowed in November Great crop No blackfly just delicious!
