I've been with Plusnet for many years, had a few issues over the years, but no major problems.
I don't stream videos or online gaming so I do not need much bandwidth.

@Michael Hewett - you don't mention what connection you have, is it via the old BT copper cables or do you have fibre providers ?

The fibre connections do seem so much more reliable than the copper cables.

Had both Virgin and Vodafone fibre connections and the reliabilty has been excellent, but of course its when you need to negotiate the charges or move suppliers etc that the problems can start.

Have a look at this well known site which has all the latest broadband offers and deals that can save you lots, just enter your postcode, though be aware that many of the cash back offers etc. stipulate you must apply online to get them.

Even if you do have a mobile phone, you could still be without communication. It will depend on the length of the power cut and what percentage your battery was at the time, not ideal if you needed to call emergency services.

Worth using an old mobile with a Traditional (not monthly) PAYG sim card but with a different network provider so if your main provider goes down you have an alternative.

If your broadband/router goes down, most modern smart phones allow you to Tether it to your PC so you can still access the web and emails etc.

This is good advice - particularly with how connected everyone is. I've taken this idea a bit further. We're using a mains powered mifi router and have a battery powered mifi router charged and ready to go in the cupboard. The battery mifi has the same SSID and password as the mains powered version - so if the mains mifi breaks down - swop the sim from one to the other and everything automatically connects to the battery powered version. Tested it out last week and it works fine.

Only issue is with 30 bits of kit on the network - the battery mifi cost a fair few quid.

If the mains goes off - there is a tablet with blue tooth keyboard and mouse - just in case.

Thanks for everyone's advice, although I did not understand most of it.

I bought a mobile today so that I can be in touch with people until my landline is fixed and then it's 'goodbye' Vodafone !
The mobile will come in handy if the car breaks down or something. It hasn't got internet - I can't be doing with that on such a small fiddly thing, and I don't want it when I'm out anyway.

                Thanks for the link @ricky101.

We've had BT for over a decade, just upgraded to fibre, have to say very good so far, we have a BT landline as well and I have a Pay as you go mobile with O2 and the wife has EE, all seem to be just what we need though being close to the Cairngorm mountains, we can lose mobile signal when out.
