You could cut last-year's used grow bags into half, and stand them on end to make two "containers". I would think that's about the right size for a Brassica plant. :blue thumb:

I find FB&B and Chicken manure type fertilizers "difficult" for containers to judge the amount to use; others may have recommendations though. I find it easier to use a liquid feed (such as Miracle Gro, or a Tomato fertilizer for things that are "fruiting") which you just add a measured amount to a watering can and do a "normal watering" - repeat the feeding-cycle fortnightly, water normally, as required, in between.

I have been busy doing some gardening this evening and am still persisting with my broccoli plants (not seedlings anymore!) I have kept hold of three of them and am growing them in large grow bag type things! Here's a photo of them so far...I keep them covered with micromesh all day, everyday, in case of slugs/snails/ pigeons etc...
I think they look fine...but would love a second opinion...

They look good, I grew some broccoli last year for the first time, they take about 9 months to produce and they need a cane or some type of support to stop them falling over. check under the leaves in summer for white cabbage butterfly eggs, they lay them in yellow clusters and check in the growing tip for small white cabbage caterpillars, they lay a single egg so you won't find them till they start feeding. Good luck.

My borccoli seems to be doing ok...however, as you can see from my photos, the three that I kept and am attempting to grow in containers are looking slightly wind swept and 'broken'. The weather here has been horrific...like the middle of winter, and my tomato planter cover blew ontop of them the other day and bent them right over. Any idea how long it will take for the edible part to appear? I started these off at the beginning of April.

Can anyone tell me if my broccoli is nearly ready? They were started on the 4th April and there is a head developing on all three of my plants, and side heads forming too. I am just unsure as to how big I can expect each floret to be...?

    Hiya Mark

I don't know what others think, but to me they look ready.

    Cheers...Freddy
