Hi terrier, temperature of about 70f is fine a sunny window ledge could be too hot if you have a cover over the seed tray it's surprising what temperature it gets to,leave them at room temp and don't worry about them going a little cooler at night sometimes propagators are turned off at night to achieve this temp. difference and induce germination, yes soak them for 24hrs again at room temp. (brugs 48hrs soaking) and young daisy is right they can be spasmodic.
Just as a by the way throwing the rule book on its head I overwintered a brugmansia Arborea outside covered it with a mesh cage roof over it etc about 3 weeks ago I uncovered it and thought that's a goner, indeed it was after our bad winter, however unknown to me about 8 seeds from last year had fell on the compost they were all growing even though we were still having frosts all potted on and doing fine so it just goes to show.

I hate to report that my beautiful pink Brugmansia suavolens which I had for many years in a pot has died having been put in the ground in the same spot where the pot stood .... RIP. Unfortunately so has it's long-time friend, the white Bruggie which I gave to my friend and he put in the ground .... is there a message here, I ask?

Upon my return from holiday I shall buy another fully grown one (if I can find one) replant and hope for the best.

The Iochroma and Cestrum one on either side were unaffected by our slight frost for a couple of days ... well, the Iochroma lost it's leaves but is getting quite lush at the moment and the Cestrum never seems to stop blooming.

Any ideas walnut what went so drastically wrong?

Hi my Lady, cann't understand them being killed with the slight frost you had,are you sure they are dead?
I have some that have been out all winter and are only now just showing signs of life the stem is dead but near the bottom small green buds are developing,my iochroma australis has survived outside but my iochroma cyanea which was in the p/tunnel has died, one of my cestrums has survived the winter outside, there's nowt so queer as plants.

:) Apologies my sweet walnut, I've waited until the return from my brief holiday to answer this to see if there were any changes. Sadly, no ... it's dead as a do-do ... we shall be looking this week for a replacement of a sizeable size ... if you know what I mean ... :hehe: I shall go for the pink again as it's my favourite .... will post a pic as and when.

Don't give up just yet on those Brugs that have just been overwintered here are some kept outside overwinter with protection they have had their covers off for about 6 weeks only getting covered with a large inverted plant pot should a frosty night threaten.
These shoots have only appeared in the last week or so.
(small shoot about 3" up the stem and one on the left side)

(near the top on this one)

(this one is shootig from the base the main stem is completely dead)

(another shooting in a couple of places from the ground the 3 stems are dead)

Further down the line some of the overwintered ones now in the polytunnel are growing apace many now reaching the top of the tunnel and throwing out the odd bloom.

This is "angels summertime" prior to opening fully.

here she is fully open with a wonderfull scent she does attempt a double flower.

This is superspot prior to colouring up.

    full colour.

The colours will get more intense (and the fragrance) as the weather gets warmer.

:) Hello walnut ... I was harsh with myself and resisted temptation to destroy and left things be ... mainly because when we went to the place I know sells them, they didn't have any ... is there a message there, I ask?

Now I have looked at your photographs and your stems look like mine. I have gone back outside and chopped back into the 'dead, hollow sounding stems' and lo and behold there is green ...

I notice you have drastically cut yours down. I only did mine to about 80cms as that is I think what my b-in-l does and his is wonderous in a pot in Germany as you know. I also note you have one with three stems from the base, as mine is. I actually don't like that and would like only one stem. As it seems all three are still alive, do you think it wise I remove two? I really haven't a clue what to do and rely on you for advice as there seems to be no one else to ask or can offer good advice .... :ntwrth::luv:

Oh, and what beautiful blooms ... please stop tormenting me at the moment ....

Hi my lady, most are cut back to 6" for storage reasons in the winter they tuck easily under the bench I have some that are still at last years height they are touching the roof in the p/tunnel now so are 7-8 ft tall and growing fast at the moment the single stems 3" dia.One twin stem I have twined together something you could consider with your 3 stem so you have the one flowering cluster at the top, your other choice is to cut 2 stems leaving just the one as you favour, don't forget you can easily use the bits you cut off for cuttings they are easy to take in water

Hi Bob hard to tell just off the leaves it could be a double Candida type or a double Suaveolens,it's grown from a cutting so should not be long before you have a flower bud or two,the seedlings are looking good that Suaveolens cross could turn out to be Pink,Yellow,White or any colour inbetween.

Walnut, the seeds I had from you via the seed exchange are doing brilliantly. The plants are two feet high with huge leaves, and just look so healthy. I am putting some, but not all, out during the day and tucking them up at night.

My question is - do I pinch them out.

Peter don't pinch them out the main stem will grow to 4,5 or 6ft then will fork and form a "y" they then keep forking and a flower will develope at every fork, any cuttings taken above the fork and rooted will flower right away (as is the case with Bobs bought plant) this plant could be pinched to keep it smaller but the full majesty is to grow them as a single stem with an umberella of flowers above you, viewed from underneath they are spectacular.
