Walnut - just to say the first Datura flower appeared today - white. It has been a most exciting wait as the pouches (I am sure there is a technical word for them) have got bigger and bigger. Some are still inside the greenhouse but many are outside, and they are all on the point of flowering.

I forgot to try the scent. Have just been to have a look, but the flower is over and I can't smell anything from it or any of the ones that are on the point of emerging. I noticed yesterday that the flower went over very quickly - I presume that is normal. I also had a measure. The ones in the greenhouse have a slight advantage at 2' 11" compared with the tallest outside at 2' 5"

Thanks for pointing out that the pouchy bit is a calyx. It had to be really, but I have never seen a calyx anywhere near that size. On my Salvias you are lucky to get half an inch. Size matters. :D

I went into the greenhouse tonight to water, and was hit by a heavenly scent. Only then did I look for the source and found two Datura flowers in full bloom.

This is my first year growing these. They seem quite sturdy - hope they are okay. Any advice please?

Nice looking plants, clem. Walnut, I've never had rsm or catepillars on mine (although the snails love them:(). Aren't they more of a problem when you grow them in G/houses:scratch:

Hi Caj red spider can be a problem outside as well as in the greenhouse epecially in a hot dry summer, they are prone to caterpillars outside as well, lots of moths lay their eggs on them,be vigilant and pick them off or use provado ultimate bug killer ,there is one small green caterpillar that is the same colour as the leaves, a devil to spot.:(

Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction Clematis.
Hi everyone just joined you all this morning and looking for an answer re two of my brugmansias, Herzenbruge and Dark Rosetta. They are being ravaged by some mystery beasts at the growing tips and turning into fine lace. No slugs as pots are pelleted, no aphids, no red spider in fact I can find nothing. Any advice and help would be very very welcom as to what it is and what treatment.
    Thanks in advance
    Carol

Hi potgirl welcome,it is possibly capsid bug(Plesiocoris rugicollis spray with bifenthrin (Bayer Sprayday Greenfly Killer Plus, Doff All-In-One Garden Pest Killer, Bayer Bug-Free or Scotts Bug Clear Gun) they are very elusive when you go near the plant they hide so difficult to diagnose.
