Hi Caj, Provado is good against lily beetle, whitefly, scale, greenfly, red spider mite, blackfly, meally bug and thrips it contains : imidacloprid and methiocarb and is systemic however I have found it's no defence against capsid bug:( you need something more specific, sprays containing "biffenthrin" work in a different way it targets the breathing system of the blighters,:) it's one of the Pyrethroids so shouldn't be sprayed when there are bees about.[IMG]

Just re-read that, walnut. Why can't we get Pyrethrum spray (neat) anymore? Maybe planting marigolds round them might help.

Hi Caj you can get it in small pyrethrum sprays in health stores for insect bites and stings costs an arm and a leg it's one of those things they have found to be harmful to the lungs so it is used in some sprays with caution hence the biffenthrin route, professionals like farmers can get pyrethrum in concentrated form but it's not available to the amateur, I have tried the marigold trick several of my big pots are surface planted with marigolds the only thing is they are 8ft away from the top of the plants so wouldn't stop capsids or caterpillars from moths,it may stop certain pests crawling up the stem and I have never had a whitefly problem, vigillance is the key be ready armed and pounce when necessary.:pala:

Walnut, I would just like to say thank you for the info on capsid bug and bifenthrin - neither of which I was aware of. I bought some Bayer Bug Free yesterday.

Whilst my Brigs and Dats have not been attacked, so far, by anything other than the odd slug, my Salvia splendens were attacked several months ago by what is now clearly capsid bug. Having Googled pictures of the damage that they do.

Will any pyrethroid insecticide do the trick, or does it need to be specifically labelled as bifenthrin?

Hi Peter,as you have probably noticed lots of insecticides/fertilizers etc have changed quite dramatically over the last few years some have disappeared off the shelves some have changed formula, one of the main reasons is some ingredients were found to be carcinogenic another the chemical companies strive to make a product that is top in its field, to make a product good the delivery to the plant has to be the best,it has to spread mix with several different ingredients and kill or fertilize efficiently. In the last few years experiments with "Nanoparticle formulations has been taking place to obtain better spatial distibution of the product on plant leaves which makes it more efficient.I know that bifenthrin was one of the ingredients that came out well and was amenable to this treatment as for other pyrethroids I'm not sure.
One thing for certain these bugs are becoming more of a nuisance and are hard to notice they blend in well and have a habit of scuttling under leaves or dropping off in the soil when you approach.

Hi walnut. Oh! I'll pounce straight away.:thumb: Just nice to know what to pounce with. A shotgun might damage the plant a tad.:D

Hi walnut. Got your P.M. Tried to reply but your inbox is full, or something equally complicated. That bug is 1" long and had its sucker bits in my Brug. They've all been blitzed with Pyrethrum. I've found out where to source it:wink: Good luck with the seeds:gnthb:

Hi walnut. Can't get a better piccie, They're all dead. :lollol: Didn't need the shotgun:hehe: Glad I can hold of Pyrethrum again:wink:. It's the only poison I like to use. It's the only one I trust on edible stuff. However, I'll still use Provado on the non-edible stuff and the Brugs.

My friend bought me this Datura metel today ... it's the one we called 'purple frilly knickers' that I had years ago and the first time I have seen it since. Sorry for the not-so-good photo as the flower is about to go ... I'll try to get better pictures later in the week as there are loads of buds on it. We were just gobsmacked to see it ... and even moreso for â?¬5,25 in a 20cm pot and 70cm tall.

T'other half has suggested we dig up the Brugmansia which still is not doing much and replacing it with this.

It will be in dappled shade under the Jacaranda. How tall do they grow? Are they hardy enough for me?

Any thoughts and advice greatly welcomed.

My experience of those double Dats. is that they dont last long, plant wise that is.

But then I'm a bit prejudiced against them, I dont like the way they seem to hang on to their half dead flowers.
Must admit they are nice while the flower is still fresh.

Maybe they are better in your climate.
