Cajary it's fine to root prune when they are in a pot but as LoL says a bit more difficult to do when they are in the ground. One method of growing them I have come up with where you get the best out of your Brugs. when it is about to go in its final pot(plastic 15"-18")dill 2" holes all the way round it, line it with paper put in the compost and plant bury the pot in the ground,it will grow at its best all season much easier to regulate watering, before the first frost dig round the pot chop all the excess roots that have grown through the holes cut the main stem down to 6"(use all the bits for cuttings) put pot in shed or greenhouse for overwintring.

Thats a good idea walnut, I grew a jacaranda by a similar method for quite a few years.
Even when pots with large drainage holes are used, I find many plants will root through during the summer and require much less watering and feeding.

    FINALLY!!! After 3 year's wait..

    My first brug flower.

The first two years Red Spider Mite decimated my brugs. This year the first flush of leaves were devastated by caterpillars, but this Isobella cross produced buds, and today I have my first bloom with many more to follow.

I was hoping it wouldn't be white, but I'm still happy.

    Congratulations, Rich!

I was having difficulties with my pink one, but after following walnut's advice, repotting, feeding and giving lots of TLC, I now have dozens of buds and my first bloom ... what a joy it is!

I gave my white one to a friend who has planted it in the ground and it is doing well also.

Hi Rich well done, what about the fragrance? you look to have a suaveolens brug and they are not self pollinating if you are interested in producing your own seeds I can send you some yellow or pink pollen to dab yours with just drop me your address on an e-mail.

Thanks very much Walnut. I'd like to do that and share any seeds I get.

I have 9 brugs, most are from seeds with a named mother, but this is the first one to flower.

The pink pollen I sent was off a flower that was almost identical to isabella although it is unnamed, so crossing with yours should get you back to pink.

Hi guys. The young plants (cuttings from last year) are really suffering in this wind. I've lost several branches. I've been feeding them really heavily. Could that be producing long but weak stems?

I've always understood you can't overfeed brugs, but you may have a point.

    Here is mine today.

Wind damage can be a problem, if they are in the open in the shape of a standard stake them well or let them grow in a shrub form to some extent it will then be self supporting even so bits do get broken off but the plants can stand it the growth rate is so rapid.Never overfed a brug yet.
