Brugmansia

You know that old phrase you can never have too much of a good thing ... well, sometimes you can, believe me. One can only spend so much time in the sun ... and even in the shade in the heat. I know John @JWK would be in Seventh Heaven here. I would just like the rain we used to have 20 years ago. It is probably just an age thing. Also my mobility issues have not helped.

 

We have irrigation of sorts but minimal as a lot is inoperable, so J has to go out with the hose, not to his delight I might add!

There is not much 'alotmenteering' going on down here. It is too hot to be fun ... and cheaper to go to the daily markets and buy from the locals.

However, in lieu thereof one can take up tropical/sub tropical gardening ...

 

Ah, penny dropped ... no, I can't grow any of those.

 

Have you ever visited East Ruston Old Vicarage @Thevictorian ? Their huge standard Brugs are quite a feature

 

I went through that phase a couple of years ago Fortunately I kept cuttings of the pink, yellow and variegated-leaf ones so now just have one big pot of each. All the previous big plants went into the garden but never made it through the winters. It's aggravating because there's a beautiful big yellow-flowered tree in a front garden in our nearby small town

 

I'm sorry for the terrible pictures but all I had to hand was an old steam powered tablet. They seem to be flowering ok but they aren't in a particularly healthy state at the moment as I was away when they got infested with aphids and spider mites before now having some white fly on my arrival and looking very droopy. The flowers are smaller than normal but I'll forgive them for that.


These start out very yellow and turn peach as the mature before ending almost white.


This is the pink. The colour becomes more intense before it also fades to a light colour.







In total we have just over 50 flowers out at the moment and a couple of dozen on their way. There is a quite delightful pong when we open the lean to in the morning.

 

Wow, I think they look great. Do you know the name of the one with red edges? It looks like the unknown one I may have. The pink one looks like my B suavolens.

 

Sorry Victoria, I don't know the names of any of them as they are cuttings from unknown varieties that I took. Unfortunately the friend I got the original cuttings from is no longer with us.

@JWK I'm in norwich and this isn't the first flush of flowers we have had.They have flowered on and off already this year but gradually increased the amount each time from 5-6, upto 12-15 and now this. They are in an unheated lean to which offers some protection in the winter (goes down to just above freezing some nights though) but it was so mild that they kept their top growth and just started early. Normally they would have gone outside a month or so ago but the weather has been unseasonably wet and cold here, so perhaps the extra shelter has helped them a bit.

 

Sorry @noisette47 I completely missed this. I haven't been but my parents have and they actually went yesterday. They said that the brugmansia were not out yet because they had only recently been moved outside for the summer. Apparently they are redoing some parts of the gardens but the hydrangeas looked glorious.

 

Gosh that's late! (The Brugs going out....) It looks as though the cool, cloudy conditions are pretty widespread this year.
My only gripe with EROV was that, as it got bigger and bigger, there wasn't a chance of getting around it all in a day. I hope to get back over there to see it again before I'm crated up for the crem, though

It's unusual that I beat you to anything, Victoria, but mine has been and gone (for now) It is in a pot, though.
