To Clueless1, Has bean counter and Joey2201, thank you all so much for the feedback and advice.

Has bean, I will definitely cut the existing roots away and you've put my mind to rest because I was a bit worried that there were hardly any good roots left anyway.

I'm a real newbie to gardening (apart from cutting the grass) and this is the most technical task I've undertaken so far but I have to say I've really enjoyed it. It took me over 4 hours in total to cut up and bag the buddleia (filled 10 big green bags!). I lift weights in the gym when I can after work and am pretty fit but I was really surprised how physically demanding this was. Love the physical tired feeling though - very satisfying.

    Mac.

:yho: Mac.. I am sure you will have a descent bush next year as they have to be one of the most resilient shrubs in the garden.. Yes as we have all said prune again in the spring.. Have another look at that link I gave you as well for future pruning as you really do need to just chop it down each year.... I am glad you enjoyed the challenge & the banter on here. Hopefully your interest will stay & we will see more of you.. Gym or no gym.. :hehe: You can get a pretty good workout in the garden too... :lollol: Nice to see the photo too... :thmb:

Thanks for all your help Marley (not least for helping me to post the pics :o I'm really not a technophobe - honest!). Definitely enjoying reading around the forum and will stick around and post more pics of my buddleja in the spring to show how well it's doing - now there's optimism for you! :thmb:
