In our house i have windows with lockable two positions. The first is a tilt so you can get great circulation in the house but no-one can get in, but then by unlocking the catch you can tilt the window through almost a 180 degrees so the outside can end up inside (makes for very easy window cleaning) but in between you have them tilted open or anything in-between.

Not sure you would be able to do that these days due to fire regs.
Although I've seen lots of them around.

When I replaced mine about 7yrs ago I had to have different hinges on at least one of the lower opening sashes, which allowed the window to open to 90 degrees and not obstruct the opening, unlike the normal friction hinges do.

Restrictors called'Kiddie locks',usually fitted at the top of the frame, only allows the window to open 100mm,should you need to open it fully just unhook the lock.

Have lived in a bungalow for some 3/4 years and the top windows are always open. Should you be unlucky enough to attract burglars/thieves my view is that if they want to get in they will find a way - the dog adds a bit of safety as do good locks and French style shutters, but.........

D'you know, I never think about burglars/thieves, if I'm not in the house & someone comes to the door my dogs make a lot of noise, I am more worried about being raped/murdered.
