I do the same as pete burn it on the ground, next one will be in the autumn when the night draw in a bit. I do like having a bonfire especially when it's a cool night.

As mentioned you can get an incinerator bin, just like this one.

But my "problem" with them is that they soon rust, and after a few years the bottom falls out.

I would say, save your money and go with the lawn idea. As for greener afterwards, if you watch "nature" programmes they do say that after a forest fire the place is very green.

You could always do what a few of us round here do. Hmmm, my bin is full, I will be a good neighbour and give some to my other neighbours and to save them grief, I will put it directly in their bin.
(Our council will not take anything unless it is in the bin, even if its obvious its rubbish, "if it aint in a bin it aint goin in!)

Thank you everyone but as I said I took the cowards way out I've bought a basket/cage type burner that I can also use as a compost bin thing :D.

A lot of people think that but it has never been a law, just a unwritten one. :D

          Hi kizzie,

You are correct that there is no national law against bonfires but some councils have passed local bye-laws to ban fires so you should just check whether yours has done so. Even if you don't have a local bye-law the council can still get you for nuisance if it is too smoky. Having said all that, the amount you can burn in a cage wouldn't be a problem.

I have regular large bonfires and always check with neighbours whether they have washing out and ask them to close their windows for an hour or so. Although a small fire like yours is unlikely to be a problem I would have a hose standing by just in case the wind picks up and you are producing too much smoke.

My fires are usually quite large. This is one of my typical bonfires. :dbgrtmb:

I have the hose going to make sure the surrounding trees don't get too hot.

            Oooo splendid bonfire!!

I very much doubt that my council have any by- laws about bonfires, just the normal be considerate of other people etc. I am surrounded by farms that have bonfires also when im out in the fields walking the dog, I see in peoples gardens, incinerators, fire pits etc Ive smelt the faint odor of bonfire ( ah the sweet memories)

Just hope I don't have to wait to long for my burner to get here,I have potatoes at the ready:dbgrtmb:

            Notced you are Herts/ Essexs .. I am Herts/Beds. I was Herts/Cambs before :)
