    Thanks to @Jiffy I can now confirm that it is a Snout Moth:blue thumb:

          ????? Black butterfly on purple phlox , yep in my garden. he stayed all night too, saw him the next morning. must have liked the spot. I guess when my Joe Pye Weed is in bloom down in the valley, I will find more there.

            thanks Woo. just saw some more of some type down in the valley weeding. have to take my camera with me and go back down there to continue weeding. Its so hot today.

              Wow I wish I had some of these butterflies in my garden :)

              I have got some caterpillars taking refuge inside my door frame and in the door arch. I watched one stitch together a cosy bed the other day. Is it possible to tell what type of butterfly/moth they'll turn into? Take a look:

                  Yeh, I've tried again, this is the best I can do with my phone :blue thumb:

                  I took a closer look and I've got 1 inside, on the ceiling, about 5 in the wooly cocoon things and another 4 caterpillars trying to get into the door frame. I haven't opened the other door but would expect the same amount, if not more.

                  Bump: I've just seen the "vapourer moth" and it looks pretty similar?
