Well doing nothing clearly isn't solving anything. It's now completely white with hardly one green leaf now left on it. I'd say it's well and truly dying and for the life of me I've no idea why a trim and a watering two weeks ago could have caused this.

Thanks Verdun. Cut it back hard yesterday and it seems to be still in decline. What I did notice when I chopped away about 3 to 4 inches of dead stuff was a mass of spider webbing really thick all around the main root. Possibly a spider nest. I removed a great deal of dead debris, old decayed leaves all matted inside. Since yesterday I've noticed the exposed leaves are now turning white also. It's had a good soaking of fresh rainfall in the last 24hrs but still seems to be dying back despite all efforts to find the cause. Will report back in a couple of days. If it continues to die back I may have to pull it up and start again.

It sound like it has died, I wonder if there is something in the soil getting at the roots?

If you plant again maybe replace that soil with some fresh and/or consider something else, e.g. sarcococca (winter box) has similar evergreen leaves that can be clipped if you want a formal look. It has the added bonus of powerful fragrance from tiny white flowers during winter too.
