Ahh - interesting to hear it's history. Thank you. Just looked up the picture of Mary Rose, and I think I'm in love (again!). About 6 years ago we found a load of DA roses in the corner of a Belgian garden nursery. To be honest, I don't think they realised what they had - they certainly weren't "pushing" them to the public. The owners thought we were mad when we got all excited, and carefully selected 6 roses. Winchester Cathedral did the best - I think partly because we had to dig out a huge rush-grass and a blown sage bush, to make space for it, so it had a very large hole with good compost. The others did well, as the soil was a rich loam, but Winchester Cathedral outshone them. When we moved, I decided to try to bring the rose with me. In some ways it seems criminal - to move a 5-foot rose in mid-summer. But it came with me, I cut it right back to about 12-18 inches, and it's looking very happy in it's new home. I just hope that the new growth doesn't suffer too much over winter...
The 2nd specimen is pot-grown at the moment - a birthday prezzie for hubby, when he thought we were leaving our favourite rose behind (before I got all determined!)

Good morning Sian I am so pleased for you and your success with your transplanting your Winchester Cathedral Rose and congratulations,it just goes to show that although their are rules in the Rose world, they are only their to guide you not bind you;)I often move roses at any time of the year regardless of what the general guide is:)
