Oh dear. This is a perfect example of confirmation bias,( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias) because I retained a significantly different set of facts from listening to the same programme! Who's right? We'll never know...

Flinty, it is always the case when giving opinions, I know what it means, but thanks for the wikipedia link though.

just got back from the states so had a lot of catching up to do on this thread...that was some read with some very good points...think we all know that if we called for white schools only,,,, we would be breaking the law...i could not imagine how two young children that may have known each other for the first 3 or 4 years in life would feel if they couldnt go to the same school because of the colour of skin..if this plonker in london (that ive heard on 3 radio stations:lollol:) continues with the daftest idea i have ever heard....then let him have it and build it 300miles out at sea

It is daft, but perhaps a better investment than some of these government funded race appeasing projects. Peace Homies !

I have also had to rejig my thoughts about this, although I remain unchanged as far as -choice being desirable, I can concede that overall it would be wrong on the grounds that there should be things to aspire to.
However ( isn`t it always the way with me?), the current situation is untenable, and maybe the least this guy does is draw public attention to the obstacles in the path of young black men in our society, and in turn forces a change in the education system.

Who is doing the violent killing? Is it the white kids or are the black kids killing each other?
Either way, if it's down to racists teachers, they should not be in schools passing on their racism. The teachers should be taken away from ALL the pupils, not some pupils taken away from the racist teachers.

On the subject of single sex schools, I don't think they are a good idea either. Without contact with the other sex, judgements end up being generalised and based on cliches rather than on individual merits.

Why not? I'm not a nurse, nor am I black, nor am I typical.

    Hi Nursewhen,

I went to a mixed sex school-men do fit stereotypes and generalisations-all too well-it`s just that I quite like the way they look when they are doing manual labour.:lollol:

I think there is a world of difference between overt racism though and the subliminal stuff, I have lots of different kinds of friends-young, old, men, women, fat, thin, gay, straight, tall, short, clever, stupid, black, white, some that don`t accept either statements etc and the one thing they all agree on is that they all experience open or hidden negative stuff somewhere in their lives as a result of their exterior appearance or behaviour,-and that I can`t cook:wink: which is quite untrue of course.

The problem, as I perceive it, is that it really doesn`t matter who is "doing the killing" the problem is that it is mostly young black men that are the victims-and that, regardless of anything else, has got to be looked at. What we have is not working. It`s time for ideas-radical if necessary.

I would like to congratulate everyone who has contributed to this thread :cl-p:. For a topic that is so contentious there has been no invective and mud slinging :thumb:.

I usually ignore these sort of topics because I come on GC for the exchange of gardening information and the humorous side topics.

It is always good to hear opposing viewpoints put forward calmy and I agree with all of you as I read each of your postings :cnfs: - except for Banana Man whom I know is not black :lollol:

Of course, sitting on the fence is a pain in the **** so I usually try to get off it as soon as possible. :)

I was abused as part of a minority group when I was at school but would not want to be segregated because of it. Unfortunately, segregation tends to point up the differences. Having said that, I think that the person who put forward the 'black school' suggestion was trying to use a political tool to solve a social problem that is not directly related to colour.

I don't have any answer to the problem and not even a hint of a solution.

Of course, if everyone became blind, as they did in 'The Day Of The Triffids', colour would not come into it. Alright, I know that is off topic and stupid:flag::flag::flag:
