Hi Scrungee, it all depends on the variety; Altensteinii will produce as many as a dozen side shoots in its first year from seed, the first crop of side shoots on this variety are often more vigorous and over take the initial main stem...:dbgrtmb:

Most of my over-wintered Cannas have started into life. They are all outside now having outgrown the greenhouse:

I chucked my C. warscewiczii in the ground a couple of weeks ago - they don't owe me nought, and were taking up space ... they can provide some infill, and if they don't I'll use something else.

The rest of the "more interesting" ones are coming on though:

Dunno if you remember that Autumn-before-last I grew some (Tropicana I think) from seed under Lights? These are they, in the greenhouse still though. I ought to get those other things out too, getting warm in there for the Salvias - and I want to plant the Paulownia in the Jungle (and "Stool" it to get big leaves, hopefully)

Well first post on Canna's this month . My Tropicana from Rhizomes are doing great , they are looking really healthy with good stocky growth. The Rhizome I grew in the container seems to be getting a little beaten up by the wind and the rain , I am over feeding it to try and get the body and colour up.
Plus first flower buds on my C. Marabout from June 7th :blue thumb:

Sal, I saw some at a nursery close to me, probably Dutch grown.
They were new varieties, I was tempted but I wasn't sure about the leaf colouring, it was speckled red with yellow streaks.
I left them although I think they might be supposed to look like that, didn't want to take a chance.
What is the big leaved one in mid picture?
            It looks very suspect.

Yes some of the new I bough this year are from Holland , australian and bronze , what it`s really make me worry is the fact that the leave is closed , as I look at the canna on the other side grown from seeds they are looking much better even if the weather as not been really good ....how do I know that is the virus and not blotch or disfigured leaf ?
I was reading on another forum about using aspirin it seams to work , should I take the risk or destroy the plants? after all this work really don`t want to lose all the plants ....

Tried replying to your PM Sal but the site wont have it.
Well dont know for sure, but I've also read seed does not carry the virus, and its not soil based.
Most plant viruses are spread by aphids, it gets into the sap when the insects suck, and can be spread by using knives or cutting tools when pruning etc.

Other than that I cant help, but I hope you dont have the virus in your plants.

They don't look right somehow. I'm no expert on them or the virus, maybe its the crappy weather we have been having. The darker red ones on the top right look a bit healthier. They also look a bit dry, it's hard to tell from a photo but do they need a good watering?

John , has been raining for the last 3 months no stop , the weather has been cold and damaged many plants but that look like the virus to me , the plant in the picture should look like the one on the back , black /bronze , played safe and 7 of the plants are now in the canna paradise (rubbish bin) , really gutted about it , after all the overwintering , the early start and the bad spring and even worst , my canna edilus and the 2 cleopatra are not looking good :frown:....
worst for worst , will start all again next year from seeds and never buy a canna anymore .

I not having a great "Canna year" either :gaah: , my young plants grown from seed are doing very little at the moment, they just haven't moved out of the 'stalled' stage that I have experienced with them before but usually only lasts a week or two. The strange thing is that they have abdundant root growth and some are throwing up suckers but none of the varieties I'm growing are over 18"......a frustrating year I thinks :frown:

If we had the warmth with the wet it would be ideal.
Unfortunately, its been too cold, as well as wet.

I think the rain is due to warm up a bit this week.
