My Canna looks like the bad one above, unfortunately I think it has got Canna virus still.. and so I dug it out and stuck it in the greenhouse... it's still growing however and showing no sign of terminal decline, it just looks hideous.

The one Canna I want to get hold of is Canna brasiliensis, but I find it difficult to source one.

the canna will not die , by the virus , will keep growing and even produce flower , but it look unhealty , I got rid off mine , alway better lose one leg then both , no point of risk all the cannas .........I was reading that someone has used aspirin and it seams that the plant has started to look better , if it`s a real canna and you will manage to get seeds out of them , you`ll may start all again and have healthy plants next year.

Not growing well at this point Sal, the growth is very slow, I brought them as tubers this year, so it's nowhere near flowering point. I'll definitely try the Aspirin thing though.

I bough some tubers as well last year , from a reliable seller and in some how my canna have the virus , as everyone has recommended not to grow from tuber , but just seeds or buy plant who look really healty.......try to cut the infected leaves or aphid will spreed to all the rest of the canna , it worth to try the aspirin , but if it not a rare canna , dasn`t worth all that.

Well, I've got some Cannas that I bought as rhizomes and some that I sowed as seeds this year and it's a bit of a mixture.:heehee:

Pretoria ....I missed the damage as I was on Hols but think it was done while the leaf was still furled, hence the neatness of the holes!!

Four rhizomes bought 3 years ago don't appear to be doing anything but I'll hang on for a while before I pronounce them dead!!

The trick now, Mowgley, is to move them to their places in the borders......without damaging them!!:coffee:

My Cannas are still doing nothing height wise, yet they are sending up suckers as expected, seems strange to see 10" plants that should be several feet tall with 2 and 3 suckers :rolleyespink:

The one positive I can take is my last remaining Altensteinni rhizome from last year (the others rotted) that had done nothing either produced a shoot about 5 weeks ago whilst lying on damp compost in the greenhouse, I potted it up and its now about a 1ft tall, taller than the other varieties grown from seed in February!!!, its too late for it to get to 10-11ft like last year but hopefully I'll have a healthy plant from it to get through the winter, fingers crossed..

Similar story here Bilbo , my seed grown Cannas Marabout and Altensteinii are still just above knee high . The Marabout produced flower buds in early June , these seem to have perished . The Canna Tropicana grown for last years rhizomes are doing well they look healthy and are not a bad height.

So far my Cannas from seed and rhizomes are doing okay.....with four exceptions. Four of the Canna rhizomes, about two years old, have failed to show despite being protected during the Winter. Should I declare them kaput since it is nearly August and there's no sign of life and repot the new Cannas grown from seed this year into the bigger pots?:snork:

I think its safe to perform the last rites on them Armandii !
Very quiet Canna thread this year , probably everyones Cannas are sulking a little due to the weather. Hopefully this good spell we are having/had will give them a shot in the arm ! My C. Tropicanas from rhizomes are looking 100% at the moment and good healthy flower buds are forming :blue thumb: I won't mention the others !

Thanks, Harry. I'll dump the old rhizomes out of their pots tomorrow, put new compost in and then the new Cannas in. I thought I had got all of them through the Winter safely but..........obviously not!!!:dunno::snork:

"red" Canna, from Ebay seed this year has just come into flower:
.. theres about 8 or 9 more that should get to flower this year. They were supposed to top out the tropical border outside my house, but the only thing that has done well is the Datura la fleur lilac:
... which has grown bigger than the Cannas & the purple castor oil plant, which has really stuggled (both those from this years seed too).
Hopefully if we get a bit more sun I will get a few more flowers yet.
