I think I too have had my mind made up, that I will stick to seed growing my Cannas, which is my own personal preference anyway as I get so much satisfaction out of growing something from seed so I'm not disheartened in anyway :) .

The two I 'bought' this year was really because they were a little different to the bog standard Cannas you normally see for sale round here; that being the red flower indica type. It appears I have been lucky and not bought anything with the virus as they really are very healthy plants :)

The generic red cannas that I grew from ebay seed this year have done ok - remained virus free & put out some small red & yellow flowers - I shall be attempting to overwinter these in the greenhouse but it looks like Ive got lots of seed pods on the way so if anyone wants a feew seeds PM me & I shall pop them in the post as they ripen up. Nothing spectacular, but good for a tropical border.

Must admit I had a peek on there website too when they emailed me about their sale. I decided not to buy, I've got enough stuff to overwinter anyway.

plus they have few virus resistant cannas , to be honest the last few canna I bought from my local ducth market , grown from seeds seams that they are virus free......really strange.

but pretty sure that they will tell me that is now sold out and if I want to swap with something else.....already uppen before .

I'm hoping to harvest some seeds from my black canna. First time I've grown cannas and I'm pleased as punch with them. If anyone wants some seeds, then let me know and i'll get them to you. The seed pods are drying out now so when they Split I'll harvest the seeds if thy come good.

Hi Al how you doing , sorry but the seeds of your black tropicanna , will not produce true plants ....as it not a true species but a chimera , same story with the stuttgard, pretoriana , rainbow, cleopatra, bengal and so on , it can`t be grown from seeds , but only from cutting ....but it would be still interesting what canna will come out.

Hi sal, doing great mate, yourself?

So, the seed pods won't ripen on the black and produce a plant, only with a cutting? I know it's a hybrid and won't produce a true plant, but part of the fun is seeing what grows  :dbgrtmb: :dbgrtmb:

Yeah, that hurt when I saw they had them in the sale ... less than four quid ... I can't bare to thing what I paid for mine in the middle of the summer at the Exotic Plant sale up in the fens, I got myself one of those "couldn't afford not to have it" moments!. Mind you, its a decent size :)

Yeah, they might ripen, and worth growing to see what you get. Be ruthless and chuck em away if they don't make a nice plant, you'll have millions of them over the years waiting for the jackpot I'm afraid. Fun trying though, and costs nothing, AND you get something back ... unlike other lotteries I could mention!

Cheers Kristen, I'll give them a go if they ripen. Free plants? What could go wrong?!

Free plants indeed ... but you could look after them lovingly for a year, and lavish gifts of fertilizer and water on them, only to find out that they are ugly duckings :(

Maybe a little early but ordered my canna seeds for next year. :snork:
Ordered from the same place as bilbo did this year but went direct through there website instead of eBay.
                    http://www.karcheskycanna.com/
They were very helpful, should arrive sometime next week hopefully
                    Ordered 4 packets in total
Musaefolia, skyhawk, tropical bronze scarlet dark leaf and tropical white
They have quite a large collection :snork:
