Can you quarantine them? Some family with a garden with no Cannas? (so they have nothing to become infected) Put them there in May and bring them home in July / August if they look OK ? Requires some family/friends who know how to remember to water a plant !!

Well thanks to the ever helpful Alice at Karchesky Cannas I now have an 'almost' definite ID for my unknown Canna that I bought earlier this year, according to her it looks very much like Canna Zulu Warrior, originally bred in Texas, USA and imported to Britain a few years ago......happy days :dancy:

My stubborn Canna altensteinii flower bud has finally burst open just a couple of days after moving it under cover :)

I love the more subtle tones of this Canna flower..:)

The Canna altensteinii you kindly sent me never managed to flower as well Bilbo, also the C Marabout I grew never really flowered. Luckily my C. Tropicannas from rhizomes really put on a good show this year.
For next year I would like to grow one or two varieties with coloured / stripey leaves. Two problems - a) I don't know which varieties have stripey leaves  and b) where I can buy the seeds from ( I can't find Karchesky Cannas on Ebay ) ! On here I have seen C. Durban and C. Cleopatra which seem to have stripey leaves ?
            Any ideas team Canna ?

            TIA

Hi Harry, 'Stuttgart' is a well known 'stripey'/variegated one, Jungle Seeds are currently selling rhizomes for £3.50, Sal's just ordered some and they look good..:)

If you can manage to overwinter 'altensteinni' I'm sure it'll flower for you next year, I didn't think mine was going to this year as it got going so late :dbgrtmb:

Regards to Karchesky Cannas, I can't seem any of their listings on Ebay either at the moment but I have just been messaging Alice over ID'ing a Canna for me and mentioned that I may want to order some seed, she said either drop her an email or message her through Facebook and she'll check on availability and take it from there, they have fantastic customer service, can't be faulted :dbgrtmb:

Just found it - This is the Karchesky Ebay store Bilbo, the seller name is beloved1.
Now that Stuggart looks very very nice , I've added it to my wish list for 2013. Its only available from rhizomes though?
Update : Jungle seeds have no Stuttgart left ,Sal has bought them all !:gaah:

Yes. Better actually to buy a plant, then you can be more sure it is virus-free, whereas with a rhizome you won't know until it grows - then you have the disease on-site and possibly already being spread. I regard Jungle as a quality supplier though, so I would be prepared to buy rhizomes from them in Late season when they are splitting them off known-clean-stock.

I wouldn't buy rhizomes in those plastic packets that the Sheds sell in the Spring though - no way of telling whether it is diseased until it has grown

Without reading all 462 posts, I take it I should bring John/Kristen's Canna indoors before the frost comes?

After frost will be fine - like Dahlias, once they are blackened. Only really need to bring in if a) you think they will die in the winter [wet & cold is not good] or b) if you want to start them early, under cover, to get them to flower earlier (and c) because you only have a few plants and don't want them to die!)

I have loads of seed of C. warscewiczii - so if yours snuff it over winter, because you don't have time to dig them up, that's an option
